the swim

Allerthorpe Sprint Triathlon, East Yorkshire: 750m

Comprising a 750m smooth lake swim in the safe man-made Allerthorpe Lake.

The swim at Allerthorpe Lakeland Park is a 750m open water swim set in the shallow and clear Allerthorpe Lakeland Park. Water depth is no more than 5 ft, so it’s pretty easy to stand up should you feel the need; it’s a swim, though, so no walking is allowed. The swim is wetsuit legal, so for all of us “weaker” swimmers, the wetsuit will really help keep those legs up to reduce drag.

Allerthorpe Lakeland Park is well sheltered from the wind, so the water is flat and not choppy, making breathing so much easier, because other than the splashes from fellow Tri-athletes, there are no waves.

Having completed the swim, it’s an easy jog to the bike rack to locate your bike and prepare for the 20k bike leg.

the bike

Allerthorpe Sprint Triathlon, East Yorkshire: 20km

A flat 20km road bike course around the quiet country lanes.

The roads around Allerthorpe are very flat, so is the bike course, and it should be easily tackled by anyone who is fit enough to ride a bike for around an hour.

Although a road bike is recommended, the flat course makes the ride suitable for almost any bike. Many first-timers borrow a bike or use mountain or hybrid bikes. Of course, you will likely complete the ride in a faster time if you use a road bike and are used to riding one; however, you will be able to complete the race on anything with two wheels. Make sure it’s is in good working order and roadworthy. Marshalls will be looking over bikes in the racking area.

the run

Allerthorpe Sprint Triathlon, East Yorkshire: 5km

A very flat and pretty 5km run. It’s ideal for first-timers or those wanting an early season PB.

For the third and final discipline of your race, you will exit the transition area after racking your bike and venture out onto a single flat loop 5km run course.

As you cross the finish line, you will receive your Marauder finishers T-shirt, and you can proudly say, “I’ve done a Triathlon!”

Drinks and refreshments will be available at the finish. The race will be chip timed. You will be able to find out your overall time and times for each segment of the race immediately. Full race results will be available within 24 hours of the race finishing here on the website.

I was really looking forward to this event as I have heard great things. All started off great with the swim, fab lake although somehow ended up doing 100m extra, not sure how though as I was swimming on my own and stuck close to the markers. The bike was also great until I got stung by a wasp and couldn't find anyone to ask for first aid, I needed an anthistime as I react badly. Anyway I decided to keep on going and ask for assistance once finished. Unfortunately the turn around point for the sprint route was very unclear and I missed it, I was either concentrating on the water and snacks being provided or missed it due to runners running past on the right, this saw me running until I could ask someone for help, the first Marshall I saw shouted "turn around point just up there so see you in a few minutes" to which I thought must be the 5k turnaround, turns out this was for the 10k! This was the longest 5k I have ever done. So overall I was disappointed as I really wanted to get a good time and a benchmark for more upcoming events I have this year. I may have been partly to blame as my mind was preoccupied with fatigue and the wasp sting but I think had there been a Marshall on the turn around point and not a small sign I would have not got it so wrong. When I eventually got back to base I asked to see a first aider, there was then lots of confusion whether or not there was one, until someone mentioned there had been an ambulance somewhere. As I wasn't getting anywhere. I decided to then go on a chase for this ambulance who were able to check me over. Not the best end to an already stressful day.
