Coastal Trail Series - Suffolk

Dunwich Marathon. I chose this marathon for all the wrong reasons. I had a place in the London Marathon but as a result of an injury couldn't take part. I needed another event to keep the frustration of being unable to train at bay. I chose Dunwich because my son lives close by. Training went very well and then i read the 'small print' and realised that this was a trail marathon. I quickly found suitable shoes and began training with a full Camelbac. The setting was fantastic and the views wonderful but I ran through stinging nettles, brambles, gorse, muddy puddles. I ran on sand, gravel, mud, grass, forest floor. I only survived 25km before my injury played up too much. In spite of this I will be back next year to finish the course. The organisation was relaxed but good and I cannot fault it except for one thing. There is no information about toilets and yes, I am familiar with using a bush but the local protocol would be handy. No way was I going to carry a shovel to dig a hole so guidance would be helpful. On balance a great experience in spite of the early retirement.
