NOWCA Safety Wristband
Your safety in the water is our number one priority and this event will be run under NOWCA safety guidelines. All competitors must have a valid NOWCA safety wristband and wear this on the day.
If you competed in the 2019 event or regularly swim at a NOWCA venue then you will already have a wristband and just need to check that it is valid on the day of the event. (ie. you’ve paid your yearly fee of £12)
If you do not already have a band, you must purchase one by creating an account here. You can select a NOWCA venue near you to collect your band. If you wish to collect on the day, be sure to choose LONDON ROYAL DOCKS as your pick-up location. The earlier you get your wristband, the sooner you can join a session at a NOWCA venue around the country (It will also make your race morning a bit easier!)
Please note, completing your registration will NOT automatically register you for a wristband. This must be done by following the instructions above.
YOU MUST PURCHASE YOUR NOWCA SAFETY WRISTBAND NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER, 2020
You will not be able to compete without a valid NOWCA wristband.
Tow Floats
It is a condition of entry that all swimmers in the 5k & 10k event use a tow float. Tow floats are optional for those swimming in the 1.5k event, other than the 12-16 age category.
You may use your own tow float if you have one or purchase one when you complete your race entry. We would advise you to train with the tow float before the race. London based swimmers will be able to collect their purchased tow floats at Love Open Water London Royal Docks during regular swim sessions. Check out the website for session times
If you order a tow float but aren’t able to collect it prior to race day, these will be available for collection on race morning. No tow floats will be available for purchase at the event. They must be ordere BEFORE.
Wetsuits
Wetsuits are OPTIONAL in all distances other than the 12-16 category in the 1.5k event. Junior swimmers in the 1.5k event must wear a wetsuit and use a tow float.
T-Shirts
There will be no t-shirt included in your race kit (we've replaced it with some other fab goodies) Instead, fabulous artist and open water enthusiast, Jonny Voss has created an amazing illustration for the 2020 Dock2Dock and you will have a chance to wear it. We think it depicts everything that is great about swimming at London Royal Docks! You can add it to your race order when you book, or just head over to the Merchandise Tab

FAQs
I'm new to Open Water Swimming - can i take part?
Yes of course, you can, in fact we’d love you too. You will obviously need to start training in plenty of time, so come along to the London Royal Docks OWS sessions and take a look at the website for some information about coaching sessions.
Will I need any special equipment?
It is not compulsory to wear a wetsuit for Dock2Dock event. You will need to purchase a tow float if you are entered in the 10k or 5k event. These will be available to purchase for £19.99 when you book your place.
I am scared of open water do I need to have a coached session?
Yes, we would recommend that you do, please see our link to the coaching availabilities. Special coaching sessions for Dock2Dock will be held at London Royal Docks OWS.
Is the water safe to swim in?
Yes it is. NOWCA operates the swimming throughout the year in Victoria Docks and as such the water is tested every two weeks against EU Bathing regulations to ensure the purity is perfect for open water swimming. So you don’t have to worry. The water is slightly salty but really clean and pleasant to swim in. You will find that it is a couple of degrees colder than the lakes and more similar to rivers. Come and try it out for yourself.
Cut-Off Times
The 1.5k will have a cut-off time of 1hr
The 10k will have a loose cut-off time of 4 hours but it is our intention to let all of our 10k swimmers finish as long as it is safe to do so.
As this is a 2 lap course for the 10k, if you have not completed your first lap within 2 hours, you will be unable to head out for the 2nd lap.
