Organiser's Description

The Rocky Horror Swim Run is part of the Rock Hard Coast weekend (in conjunction with the family friendly National Trust’s Big Day and Big Night Out weekend) at the beautiful South Milton Sands. in South Devon.

It includes a LONG 18 mile swimrun with 4 swim legs and 4 run legs, a SHORT 8.5 mile swimrun with 3 swim legs and 3 run legs, as well as a Rock Hard sea swim at South Milton.

All participants will collect their race packs on Saturday from 1pm onwards.

All swimruns follow the South West Coast Path from Bantham to South Milton Sands, where the second swim leg takes place through the iconic Thurlestone Rock. The route then continues to Outer Hope, where swimrunners swim to Inner Hope (a 400m swim) then run back to South Milton Sands. The short swimrun ends here, while the LONG, continues from the third swim section, with a run to North Sands beach in Salcombe and a swim back to South Sands. The final run section then follows the coastpath back to South Milton Sands, via a short inland section to East Soar.

Event Information

All participants will collect their race packs either on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.

Registration and the prize ceremony take place at South Milton Sands.

Course Details

Both Long and Short events start with a swim at high tide at South Milton Sands. Swimmers will start right on peak high tide and so swim with the flow.

Both Swim Runs follow the South West coastpath from South Milton Sands, to Outer Hope, where the second swim leg takes place. Here swimrunners swim to Inner Hope (a 750m swim) then run back to South Milton Sands. Swimrunners continue on to Salcombe’s North Sands for the third swim leg before running back along the coast path and Long swimrunners take their final swim from Inner Hope to Outer Hope (opposite direction). Both short and Long swim runs end at South Milton Sands, via a short inland section to East Soar.

Rocky Horror LONG 20 miles: 4 swim legs and 4 run legs, (swim 1.7 miles/run 18.3 miles)

Rocky Horror SHORT 8.5 miles: 3 swim legs and 3 run legs (swim 1.4 miles/run 7.1 miles)

Rocky Ending Sprint: 3.5 miles: 2 swim legs and 2 run legs (swim 1 mile/run 2.5 miles)

Go Tri: 0.5 mile swim at South Milton Sands, followed by a 3k run to Hope Cove and back.

Kit List

What to wear

Unless you have told us otherwise, please make sure that you are wearing some kind of wetsuit, trisuit or swimrun suit.. Swim socks or gloves are not needed but you MUST wear the event swim cap provided, as this will identify you to our safety team and timekeepers. If you have already told us you want to swim ‘skinny’ please remind us who you are and we will pass this information on to our water safety team. Email us at [email protected]. As swimrun events are supposed to be self sufficient, you MUST bring a tow buoy with you and running shoes. Hand paddles are optional. If you are swimming as a pair, you must have a bungee. We strongly recommend that you wear some glide or anti chafe cream stick around your neck and places where it can get sore!

Mandatory equipment for team and solo participants.

NB. There will be a mandatory equipment check at registration.

  • 1 wetsuit/trisuit/swimrun suit per participant, suitable for water temperature of min 14 degrees Celsius
  • 1 pair goggles per participant
  • 1 pair off road trainers per participant
  • 1 whistle per participant
  • Hydration system, soft bottle or cup
  • Tow buoy (one per pair or one for solos)
  • Emergency food (energy bar or snacks additional to that provided a transition stations)
  • £20 in sealed bag,

This event will be plastic cup free in a bid to reduce waste and help care for the environment. Water will of course be available at feed stations and the finish line but you will need to carry your own bottle or cup.

Where can we park and is it free?

You can park in the National trust car park for free regardless of whether you are a member.

Can I enter on the day?

There will be limited places available on the day

What is the Rock Hard Coast Weekend?

It’s a weekend of swim runs and trail races, and forms part of the Big Day and Big Night Out annual family based weekend hosted by the National Trust, based at South Milton Sands, Thurlestone.

Are there cafes nearby

Yes. There is a lovely food shack on the edge of Thurlestone, which serves teas, coffees and fresh fish among other things.

What do we get for our entry?

You get a branded swim cap, electronic timing, a new bespoke swim run medal.

Can we hire swimrun wetsuits?

Yes. Our swim run series is sponsored by Tri Wetsuit hire and all entrants qualify for a discount on daily, weekly a, monthly and year-round wet suit hire including swim run wetsuits.

Where can I get a tow buoy

We have a limited stock available at the event and on our online shop.

What gear do I need?

For both LONG and SHORT events, you will need a tow buoy to store you running shoes/socks, vest- whatever you need to run with, as well as it being a visibility aid for our safety tea. All pairs must have a bungee cord in order to stay together. Hand paddles re allowed.

Can I swim in my shoes?

It’s entirely up to you as this can aid buoyancy but we recommend the bespoke swimrun shoes such as Vivo barefoot Otillo shoes.

Do I get a medal?

Yes This year we have a new design for the swim run series.

Do I get a tshirt?

We will have event specific t shirts for sale on line and on the day, as well as generic swimrun tshirts.

Is there safety cover?

Yes. Our safety team is the best in the biz and you will be watched and monitored the whole way by our team from Teignmouth Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

Will it be timed?

Yes. We will be using SiE electronic timing for this event.

I’m new to swimrunning. Will I be OK?

The Rock Hard Short Swim Run or Rock Sea Swim are suitable for people who want to dip their toes in the water. Give it a go!
