Organiser's Description

A scenic riverside race starting from the Burnell Avenue Recreation Field, Kingston-Upon-Thames, TW10 7YE proceeding along the Thames Path on an out and back flat and fast scenic riverside route that is very well marked and marshalled all the way along the course, with well stocked check points.

Runners World rated as one of the top 10 marathons in the U.K.

Course Description / Route

Thames Meander Route/ Laps: The run route will still start at the new Petersham & Ham Sea Cadets HQ venue and will run beside the Thames Path as far as the Kew Gardens Car Park (steps mid way along) which will be the new turnaround point for both the half marathon route. Laps wise it will entail x2 – 6.7mile out and back loops for the half marathon and x4 6.7mile loops for the marathon along this very scenic stretch of the Thames Path trail. This is a trail run not a road race so please understand that both routes are as accurate as they can possibly be on this Thames Path trail. The turnaround point at Kew Gardens will be very well marshalled by our 1254 Godalming Air Cadets. Both the checkpoints will also be very well stocked with a selection of high energy foods, gels, drinks and electrolyte powders so you can keep well hydrated, retain your electrolyte balance and maintain your re-fueling needs throughout the event staging.

The route will revert to the former out / back route for the forthcoming Thames Meander in October, once the flood defence work has been completed by the Richmond Council between the White Hart Public House and Barns Bridge. This will be an out / back route starting at the Petersham & Ham Sea Cadets and heading all the way along the Thames Path towards Barnes as far as the Barns Sports Club, and back to the Start / Finish at Petersham Cadets HQ.

Course Details

Both the half and marathon routes will start / finish at the Petersham & Ham Sea Cadets race HQ, Petersham Rd, Richmond, TW10 7AH.

Route to proceed from the Petersham & Ham Sea Cadets Start / Finish area HQ in situ, and the route will proceed all way along the Thames Path out towards Richmond town centre, past Kew Gardens all the way to Barns (opposite the Barnes Sports Club) which is the turnaround point. The course will then return to the Petersham & Ham Sea Cadets HQ. It is a 1 lap route for this out / back half marathon and a 2 lap route for the marathon course.

The route for both the races will be very well signposted with fixed pink / black Hermes Running signs marking the run-route, and there will be marshals at both the turnaround points at Barns (opposite the Barnes Sports Club). The marathon runners will be given red race bib numbers and the half marathon runners will be allocated blue race bib numbers, this is to make it much easier for our marshals / runners to distinguish between the full and half, so if you see a runner flying past you just check out their race bib before you decide to speed up!

Very scenic route along the Thames, well organised. There was a hall to get changed in, but maybe a few too many runners for the amount of rest room facilities available at peak times. Well signed route.

Well organised. Pretty straightforward route to follow along the river. The only thing I have struggled with was the amount of people during the morning and afternoon along the route, especially when coming back from Hammersmith and Chiswick Bridge. Really nice medal and good vibe in general.

Excellent organisation, refreshments and atmosphere. Thank you for an incredible experience! I only have one piece of constructive criticism. Running past the finish line to continue running for another 2 miles is psychologically quite challenging. Not sure if it would be possible to extend the first part of the race along the river so it's exactly a half way point? This way when you see the finish line, you're actually running towards it. Thanks again to all the team involved!

The on-the-day experience was great. The race took in some fantastic scenery along the Thames. Overall, the race was well organised with a nice medal at the end. Quite a bottleneck for the first 1km, so perhaps a staggered start would be better in future. The pre-race confirmation and instructions email could be improved upon - it was rather unclear.

Great fun with friends! Would have preferred a loop race, but scenery was beautiful on a sunny autumn morning!
