Thirlmere Trot

Grasmere, Ambleside, Cumbria

Grasmere, Ambleside, UK

Sat 20th June 2020

Organiser's Description

This 24 mile high level circumnavigation of Thirlmere Reservoir features about 6500ft of ascent. From the start in Grasmere you'll be clambering over the rocky outcrop that makes up the iconic summit of Helm Crag. Crossing the undulating ridgeline that incorporates Gibson Knott and Calf Crag you'll then make an ascent to Greenup Edge and on to an energy sapping traverse across boggy moorland to summit Ullscarf and High Tove.

The course quickly descends to pick up the beautiful shoreline trail and loops around the far edge of Thirlmere. The long, steep ascent up Sticks Pass follows with the summits of Raise and Lower Man waiting, before onwards to the high point of the event - Helvellyn. The route skirts both Nethermost Pike and Dollywaggon Pike on a brilliant high level mountain trail, before descending to loop round Grisedale Tarn and back to Grasmere via the scenic Little Tongue.

This is not for the faint hearted. But you'll be rewarded with ascents of some of the finest fells in the Lakes, incredible views, proper mountain trails, flowing footpaths, lots of bogs… and a bloody good meal afterwards!
