Tour of the Roses

Castle Green Hotel, Kendal, Cumbria

Castle Green Hotel, Castle Green Lane, Kendal, Cumbria LA9 6RG

Fri 6th September 2019

Starting at 11:00

Organiser's Description

The Tour of the Roses is a guided ride over three successive days, taking in the best of the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and Forest of Bowland in Lancashire. Designed for serious cyclists who like a laugh, the Tour covers a total of 315km with nearly 6,000m of climbing, including Buttertubs, Hardknott Pass and 'the Struggle', the Tour of the Roses will be a proper test of endurance.

Places are intentionally limited to keep it as social and safe as possible. We'll ride in small groups, so everyone gets to know each other. There's full support and home-made sandwiches and cakes on offer at the lunches and refreshment breaks.

Our base for the weekend will be Kendal, easy to reach with plenty of accommodation options. We’ve negotiated a fantastic group rate at the four-star Castle Green Hotel, with swimming pool, steam room, and its own local pub in the grounds.

How To Get There

By car: The easiest way is to exit the M6 at Junction 37 and follow the A684 towards Kendal. The Castle Green is on your right just before you enter the town. Five hours from London, less than two hours from Leeds or Manchester.

By train: Kendal station is served by one train per hour in each direction between Windermere and Oxenholme, with some services running direct to Manchester Airport. Passengers from most other destinations must change at Oxenholme. The Virgin Trains West Coast line connecting London and Glasgow stops at Oxenholme, and from there it's then a four minute train ride into Kendal station. Remember to book your bike on the train.

Kendal station is not staffed and is a 5-10 minute walk to the town centre. Taxis from the station must be booked in advance. The venue is about 2 miles from Kendal.

The Venue

We hope you’ll choose to stay with us at the Castle Green Hotel, set in 14 acres of beautiful wooded gardens. There’s everything you need for a brilliant weekend’s cycling, right on your doorstep.

We’ll meet up at the Hotel reception for the grand depart on Friday and Saturday, and return for post-ride refreshments at Alexander’s, the pub with beer garden set in the grounds. The Greenhouse restaurant, serving fine local produce, is the venue for our group dinner on Saturday evening.

We’ve negotiated a preferential group rate of £100 per person, per night including a three course dinner, bed and breakfast (based on two sharing). If you want to stay the Thursday night too, bed and breakfast will be £57.50.

Call 01539 734000 and mention the Tour of the Roses when booking, or send us an email if you’d like to be paired up with someone to share a room.

All rooms are en-suite with flat-sceen TVs and free wifi. There are doubles too if you’re travelling with a partner, or would rather not share.

Guests (that’s us) get use of the heated pool, steam room and fully-equipped gym. You can even book a sports massage in the spa for after the rides.

There’s loads of parking spots in the grounds and bikes can be securely stored overnight so you don’t have to wheel them up to your room.

We appreciate the Castle Green may not be to everyone’s taste, or budget, and there are plenty of great places to stay in and around Kendal. Please do still join us for dinner on the Saturday though.
