This trail event makes the most of Pippingford Park, a private estate that covers hundreds of acres in the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex. Pippingford is home to the natural lakes that make up multi lake open water swimming portion of this Triathlon. Whether you are open water lake swimming, mountain biking or trail running you’ll be stunned by your surroundings. Pippingford Park is British countryside at its finest.

If you have an appetite for an off-road triathlon with a sense of adventure and you’re at least 14 years old this is the Triathlon for you.

The Swim

This is a great place for the adventure to begin; the legendary (well almost) TrailX multi lake swim, that’s right, not only will do we have a point to point swim but it takes place in multiple natural lakes!

Both the Full Fat and Sugar Free distances will start in waves of roughly 10 competitors, they’ll use multiple lakes with short portages between them and finally a run up to transition.

In the past 2 years this swim has proved to be a real highlight for a lot of competitors. Following the 2019 race a competitor was chatting with an organiser about the great time she’s had and during this conversation she branded the swim a ‘Trail Swim’ – now we’re not sure what a trail swim is but we like it and it sounds great fun

The Full Fat event uses 3 lakes and the total distance to transition will be about 1000m.

The Sugar Free event will use 2 lakes and the total distance will be about 600m.

The lakes are fed with fresh water from a river, the result is nice and healthy water but the slight downside is that even in mid summer the water is chilly, with this in mind wetsuits will be compulsory for both distances.

The Bike

Pippingford Park has a great relationship with mountain biking, it has hosted numerous National and Regional MTB races, as a result there is some first class singletrack sections scattered around the woods. The course for both the Full Fat and Sugar Free events will be approximately 35% singletrack with woodland tracks and fire access roads making up the rest. They’ll be plenty of options for overtaking for those making up time after the swim. The middle 3rd of both courses will traverse stunning open heathland that ebbs and flows with the landscape like some sort of crazy roller coaster

Full Fat competitors will complete 2 laps of a 12km loop that will be very similar to the one used in 2019 but will include a couple of new bits to keep you on your toes. This means loads of big grin content; fast flowing singletrack, mega quick descents and challenging ups.

When it comes to the Sugar Free event it’s still 2 laps and similar content to the Full Fat course but a little chilled out. The 2 toughest climbs have been chopped off to ensure the you’re fresh enough to enjoy the fun bits. You still get loads of the smile making singletrack that this venue is renowned for but some of the more technical bits have been missed. Fear not if mountain biking is your thing as this is still a course for mountain bikes.

While were talking about bikes it’s worth pointing out that both the Full Fat and Sugar Free events are MTB only, you will not be allowed to compete if you are planning to use a CX bike, commuter or any type of road bike. This rule is here to ensure that you get as much enjoyment from the event as possible.

The Trail Run

We realeased a brand new run course for the 2019 tri and the reaction was resoundingly positive. It was tough in true TrailX fashion but the rewards were immence, stunning views and wicked flowing woodland trails. Suffice to say that we don’t have any plance to change it.

The course is approximately 4km and is a mix of woodland tracks, open moorland and gravel estate roads. You run from transition to the valley floor via a meandering descent before climbing to the highest point of the venue where you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world. At the top of the hill you’ll be greated by a water station with smiling volunteers (some competitors have been known to chill out here for a few mins, take on some water and enjoy the views), once you’re refulled it’s a case winding your way across and down the heathland before getting back to the bottom of the valley and a short trip along a lakeside path before a short yomp up to the finish line.

Full Fat competitors will complete 2 laps

Sugar Free competitors will complete 1 lap

FAQs

Of course! Everyone who is 14 and older is welcome at the TrailX Off Road Triathlon. It doesn’t matter whether this is your first race or you’re a seasoned pro. Have a read through the info on this page and press the enter button.

How long is the course?

Please Click Here for details

Can I practice the course before the race?

Yes! We would encourage you to use the bike course to warm up so you’re ready for it! We will sign a shorter route of the bike course that will take in the more challenging elements without tiring your legs! More details of this will be in the race pack

How will the start of the race work?

See the schedule page for details of your briefing and start time.

All races will use a wave start, each wave will have approximately 10 competitors and there will be a gap of 2-5mins between waves. This will ensure that each of you gets plenty of space to swim at you own pace and will ensure that there is no congestion on the MTB course

Do I have to wear a wetsuit?

In short yes:

We’ll be following the British Triathlon guidelines surrounding water temperature and wetsuits – but due to the river fed nature of the lakes the water temperature will always be on the colder end of the spectrum. Aside from keeping you warm, they also keep you safe as wetsuits are very buoyant!

Do I have to ride a Mountain Bike or will a CX bike do?

Mountain Bikes are compullsory at the TrailX Triathlon. This is to ensure you get the most out of the event, the course is designed for MTB use – that being said a regular hardtail MTB is more than suitable.
