ULTRA LONDON is London's ultra-marathon. Run, jog or walk your way around the Capital on this stunning all terrain route to Richmond, and claim your place as an Ultra-Londoner.

ULTRA LONDON follows the Capital Ring, which forms an inner circle around Greater London. Experience London’s stunning scenery and hidden footpaths in this challenging and accessible event. An epic challenge for all - seasoned ultra runners or first timers looking to push themselves even further.

Two options: ULTRA LONDON 55 - a 55km / 35 mile Woolwich to Richmond run; or LONDON 27.5 - 27.5km / 17.5 miles from Crystal Palace to Richmond.

How To Get There

The ULTRA LONDON 55 start location in Woolwich is very accessible.

The closest public transport to the start area is Woolwich Arsenal, which is served by National Rail and the DLR.

The first National Rail train from London Bridge to Woolwich Arsenal is at 05:09, arriving at 05:30, then 05:39-06:00, 05:48-06:10, 06:09-06:30, 06:18- 06:40, 06:21-06:44, 06:39-07:00 etc. The first train from Dartford to Woolwich Arsenal is at 05:03, arriving at 05:23, then 05:15-05:34, 05:41-06:00, 05:45-06:04, 06:11-06:30, 06:15-06:34, 06:41-07:00, 06:45-07:04 etc. The DLR trains to Woolwich Arsenal from Canning Town are from 05:31, arriving at 05:43.

The LONDON 27.5 start location in Crystal Palace is very accessible.

The railway locations close to the start are Crystal Palace and Penge West, served by National Rail and London Overground. Other nearby rail stations include Penge East and Sydenham.

Course Details

ULTRA LONDON 55 completes the entire southern section of the Capital Ring. Starting at the Woolwich Foot Tunnel and finishing in Richmond upon Thames. The all terrain route includes some of London’s finest scenery, including the Thames Barrier, Eltham Palace, Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park. The route is a mix of trails, footpaths, parks, disused railway lines, woodland and more. The surface will be gravel, grass, tarmac and depending on weather conditions, may be muddy in places.

LONDON 27.5 starts in Crystal Palace, which is the half way point of the ULTRA LONDON 55, and finishes in Richmond.

Other Information

ULTRA LONDON 55: Ages 20 and over as of 05/10/2019. The race will start from Woolwich in waves between 07.00hrs and 09.00hrs.

LONDON 27.5: Ages 18 and over as of 05/10/2019. The race will start from Crystal Palace in waves between 11.00hrs and 13.00hrs.

Runners will be notified of their start time a few weeks before the event.

ULTRA LONDON Rules 2019

ULTRA LONDON is London’s ultra marathon. This urban ultra-marathon is on a stunning route along the Capital Ring footpath, through nine of South London’s Boroughs from Woolwich to Richmond upon Thames.

ULTRA LONDON will provide participants the opportunity to experience some of south London’s stunning scenery and hidden footpaths in a challenging and accessible event.

ULTRA LONDON Rules:

These rules apply to both the ULTRA LONDON 55 and the LONDON 27.5

1. Race entry – all entrants will accept the event terms and conditions. All entries are via online platform, with no entries accepted on the day of the event.

2. All participants must carry some basic provisions and equipment with them at all times. A mobile phone (event control number on the race bib), Debit/Credit/Oyster card to enable travel on public transport if required, small foil blanket, small first aid kit, small cup for water, their own initial water supply and fuel/food required. Equipment will be checked at the start location and participants without these items will not be allowed to participate. Cash may also be helpful in the event of needing additional supplies along the route.

3. Roads, paths and pavements – All participants are made fully aware that the event is not on closed roads or footpaths, to give priority at all times to other road and path users and when crossing roads that the Highway Code needs to be adhered to. Participants are aware that they are responsible for themselves on all crossings. Safety and courtesy are paramount in this event and any instances of unsafe or rude/abusive behaviour by participants will lead to a disqualification.

4. The winners of the challenges will be determined by the chip timing device recorded time and by no other means.

5. Participants must be registered as themselves and not take part under any other name. Participants participating in another person’s name will lead to disqualification.

6. Participants must wear their bib number at all times and display it visibly on their clothing.

7. Participants must wear their allocated timing chip at all times. Without a timing chip, no event time will be recorded.

8. Participants are responsible for navigating the route themselves. No time adjustments will be made. It is recommended to download the event Route GPX file to assist with navigation.

9. Participants must visit each of the Checkpoints on their route.

10. Friends and family are not permitted to cycle along the Capital Ring footpath on the event day.

11. Participants retiring from the event or not completing the event before the Cut-off times will not receive a finishers medal

12. Participants who miss their allocated start time will be permitted to start, as long as they are able to start before 9am for the ULTRA LONDON 55 and 1pm for the LONDON 27.5. Any later starts will not be permitted and a DNS will be recorded by their name in the results. Please be aware that with any later starts, the cut off times still apply and a late start may risk the participant’s ability to finish the route within the cut off times.

13. Please do not leave valuables in your baggage. The organisers will not be responsible for any items lost or stolen from baggage left with the event team.

14. Sustainable policy – there is a zero-tolerance policy on littering on the route. Any participant seen littering will be disqualified with immediate effect. The use of plastic cups at Checkpoints is not permitted. All participants need to purchase their own re-usable, collapsible cup prior to entry. Particular attention is needed to be given to the tops of energy gel sachets – the organisers only permit the use of gel sachets that have non-detachable tops (eg Clif)

15. Self-supported event – Participants understand that the event is a self-supported event. Some provisions are provided at the Checkpoints, but these should be used as a back-up and not the only source of required provisions.

16. Pacers are not permitted in Ultra London. It is permitted (and encouraged) to walk/run with others however, all participants on the course must be registered as participants.

17. Retire from event - Participants wishing to retire from the event must inform a marshal at a Checkpoint or call the event control telephone number to register their withdrawal from the event.

18. Emergency procedure – there is a detailed medical procedure for the participants to follow, detailed in their welcome packs and explained in the pre-event briefing.

19. All participants must wear appropriate attire and footwear.

20. All participants, by entering the event agree to permit use of their image in film and photography, as per the event terms and conditions.

21. The cut-off times are strictly observed. The cut off times are 12:30 at Crystal Palace (for ULTRA LONDON 55 participants) and 17:00 at Robin Hood Gate, Richmond Park (for all participants). The timing of the cut off times will be deemed from the official’s time recording and not any other device. Any participants passing these points later than the cut off times will not be permitted to continue and must hand over their race bib. The cut off times apply regardless of the start time allocated.

22. The organisers reserve the right to disqualify any participant for rule violations. The Event Director’s decision is final and cannot be challenged. Any disqualifications will result in a DQ by the participant’s name on the official results. Disqualifications will result in the participant not receiving a finisher’s medal.

23. The organisers reserve the right to amend, change or add to the Event Rules at any point

Some particular rules to highlight:

  • Please be respectful to all other park and footpath users
  • We have a zero-tolerance policy on littering. We are travelling through London's finest parks and wilderness areas. Please respect the environment
  • Please bring your own collapsable cup - we don't issue plastic cups or bottles at the Checkpoints
  • Cut-off times are strictly observed
  • Smile and have fun
Spectators And Supporters

ULTRA LONDON is a fantastic event, not only for participants but also for spectators and supporters.

The route is highly accessible throughout its 27.5/55km journey. This means your supporters can join you at multiple locations along the route. They can travel on foot, by bike, car, rail, Tube or bus. to support you along the way.

Arrange to see your friends at Shooters Hill, Eltham Palace, Crystal Palace, Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park and many more of London's beauty spots. They can also join you at the finish and in the bars and restaurants of Richmond for a celebratory drink.
