Women Can Marathon

Tipton St John, Devon

Post Office, Sidmouth EX10 0AA, UK

Sun 28th May 2017

Organiser's Description

The first Women Can Marathon is inspired by the story of how, 50 years ago, one woman made marathon history simply by entering and taking part in one. American endurance runner Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to officially complete the all-male Boston Marathon, despite being manhandled by officials who tried to drag her off the course two miles in! Women had run marathons before, but in an unofficial capacity, because official participation simply wasn't allowed. Almost entirely off-road, the course takes in the Otter and Sid Valleys in the East Devon AONB and part of the South West Coast Path. It's a challenging course with a total ascent of 3,000ft, akin to climbing a mountain, but we know that both the climb and the distance are achievable - because Women Can.
