Women V Cancer Ride the Night 2022

Windsor, Berkshire

Windsor, England, United Kingdom

Sat 30th April 2022

Organiser's Description

Are you ready for the UK's biggest female cycling event?

Join thousands of amazing ladies cycling around London at night on the Women V Cancer flagship challenge!

After two long years stuck at home, we cannot wait to reunite and make a greater impact than ever for people facing breast, ovarian and cervical cancers.

Together, over a thousand women will cycle 50km or 100km (you choose!) through London at night to raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Now, Ovarian Cancer Action and Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust.

Starting and finishing at the beautiful Royal Windsor Racecourse, you’ll soak up the electric Ride the Night vibe with motivational music, speeches and warm-ups.
Then it's time to set off in waves for your chosen route. Pedalling past Westminster Abbey, the London Eye, the Tate Modern, the West End Theatres and many more spectacular landmarks, you’ll light up London with your bright pink Ride the Night vests and the sparkling Women V Cancer spirit. All the while, you’ll get fit and make a bunch of wonderful new friends.

Course Details

The Ride the Night London 2022 route isn't finalised yet, but you can expect both the 50km and the 100km distance to take you past loads of awesome London landmarks. Once it's finalised, we'll send all the excting details to everyone registered for the challenge.

FAQs

  • How fit do I need to be?

Ride the Night isn’t designed for Olympic athletes - it’s designed for women from all cycles of life looking for a challenge to train and get fit for. Cycling 100km (approx. 62 miles) or 50km (approx. 31 miles) at night is a challenge, but it’s definitely achievable with a reasonable amount of training. A number of the women who will take part in this exciting challenge will have a low fitness level when they sign up. Ride the Night is the perfect motivation to train and get fit, all whilst raising funds for three amazing charities. Take it from one of our wonderful past Ride the Nighters, Joanne: "Come on ladies, I did this in May 2018 and I'd never been on a bike before. You have people cheering you all the way around and an absolutely fantastic feeling when you finish! I will definitely do it again! When I signed up, I was the same as everyone else, like "sure I can do this," but as the time got closer, I started to question why I had entered - but I'm so glad I did! It was organised so well that I had no doubts when I arrived. Yes, 100km sounds a lot, but you just do it. We did it in eight hours and it was pain free. So if I could do it in the stupid weather we had on the 26th May 18, then anyone can!"

  • How much do I need to fundraise?

There’s no minimum sponsorship target, but we ask you to aim for £100 or more, so that your challenge can make a difference for people affected by cancer. The money you raise is split evenly between our three charities and will go a long way to help them continue their vital work in a critical time... £30 could buy a bottle of specialist dye to stain cancer cells, so that Ovarian Cancer Action’s researchers can study them with a microscope. £100 can enable Breast Cancer Now to send out another 1,000 leaflets to GPs to promote breast checking and inform about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer. £500 will enable Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust to provide a weekend of training to two new Helpline volunteers supporting hundreds of women. Join the 500 club! If you raise £500 or more by 30th March 2022, you will get a free official 500 club cycling jersey. Please take a look at our Tips and Resources here to fuel your inspiration and smash your challenge like a superhero. We will also send you seasonal fundraising ideas in the lead up to the challenge.

  • How does the money I fundraise help women affected by cancer?

The money you raise funds the vital work of our three Women V Cancer charities who are raising awareness, providing support and funding research into breast, ovarian and cervical cancers. If you’d like to know more about how each charity is making a difference for women affected by cancer, visit their websites below. Breast Cancer Now www.breastcancernow.org Registered charity no 1160558 (England and Wales) and SC045584 (Scotland) and 1200 (Isle of Man). Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust www.jostrust.org.uk Registered charity no. 1133542 (England and Wales) and SC041236 (Scotland) Ovarian Cancer Action www.ovarian.org Registered charity no. 1109743 (England and Wales) and SC043478 (Scotland)

  • Is there a minimum/maximum age limit?

You need to be 18 years old or over to take part in Ride the Night. There's no maximum age limit. One of the amazing things about Women V Cancer Ride the Night is that it brings adults of all ages and from all cycles of life together for one incredible cause. 16 and 17-year olds may participate if given permission by the event organisers. Please get in touch with us to discuss this. Simply email [email protected] and we'll be happy to help.

  • Can men take part?

We're afraid men can't participate in this Women V Cancer challenge. However, they are more than welcome to join the cause as a Ride Maker (aka. Ride the Night volunteer). We'll have a range of roles for both men and women, from supervising the bike racks to helping out at registration or the rest stops and more. If you are interested in joining us as a Ride Maker, please email us at [email protected]

  • Is there accommodation nearby?

There's lots of nearby accommodation at a range of rates for you to choose from, if you plan to stay the night before Ride the Night and when you come back from your ride. We recommend you book your room as soon as possible to get a better rate and making sure you have a free cancellation option or purchase insurance for your booking, in case you need to cancel your stay. Don't forget to request a late check out on Sunday morning, so you can sleep in after your night cycling! You are also welcome to camp at the racecourse after completing your ride. No doubt you'll be glad to collapse in your tents or camper as soon as you've crossed that finish line! (You'll need your own tent/campervan.)

  • Can I bring a campervan?

Yes, you can camp for free at the Windsor Racecourse after you come back from your ride. Please note, though, that the racecourse isn't a camp site, so you won't have access to power, water etc.

  • How do my funds reach the three Women V Cancer charities?

It's all done automatically through your JustGiving page so you don't need to do anything. If you have raised funds offline, please let us know by contacting [email protected].

  • What happens if I don't reach my fundraising target?

The fundraising target is not obligatory, so you can of course still take part in the challenge. We do strongly encourage you to do your very best to make your your hard work cycling count and raise £100 or more, as Ride the Night is a very important fundraising event for the Women V Cancer charities. We just ask to receive your sponsorship target of £100 within a couple of months after the event. All the funds you raise on your Women V Cancer Ride the Night London 2022 fundraising page on JustGiving will go directly to Women V Cancer, so you don’t need to do anything else.

  • What do I need to bring?

You need to bring your own bike and a cycling helmet is essential. It is also essential that you have front and rear lights fitted on your bike. Please bring spare batteries too. We provide bike mechanics but do ask that you bring a spare inner tube that is specific to your bike, should you get a puncture on the challenge.

  • What type of bike should I use?

Both the 50km and 100km routes are all on road – therefore we recommend using a road or hybrid bike. If you plan to use a mountain bike we would advise fitting road tyres for the challenge. You are also more than welcome to use an electric bike. We recommend that your bike is serviced before the challenge to minimise the chance of any mechanical problems.

  • Can I take part on an electric bike?

Of course! You are more than welcome to use an electric bike. We recommend that your bike is serviced before the challenge to minimise the chance of any mechanical problems.

  • Can I take part on a handbike?

Absolutely! If you plan to take part on a handbike, please let us know in advance. Please bring your own bike with working front and rear lights, along with a spare inner tube.

  • What about bicycle problems?

There will be bike mechanics at the start of the challenge, at all of the rest stops and roaming mechanics along the route. We recommend servicing your bike before the challenge and that you bring a spare inner tube that is specific to your bike.

  • What about insurance?

We have public liability insurance. However we cannot insure your bicycle on this challenge, so please make sure your bicycle is covered on your home contents insurance or that you take out a specialist bicycle cover.

  • What do I need to be aware of when cycling at night?

It is vital that you follow the Highway Code throughout the challenge and please note that there will not be road closures for the event. The route is well lit and on quieter roads wherever possible - however once you arrive in central London there will be traffic and you should be confident to deal with this. We recommend that you don't ride alone at any part of the challenge. However, don't be afraid of signing up solo - we have a Lone Riders Facebook group and meet-up on the night, so you can cycle with fellow Ride the Night superheroes. We'll send you the link to the Facebook group once you've signed up to the challenge. We also ask that you respect the local residents along the route and keep noise levels to a minimum. Please check out the Ride the Night Safety Video on the Tips and Resources page here. We will also have a short safety briefing prior to setting off on the night of the challenge. It is very important that you are visible to road users. We will provide you with a free Women V Cancer Ride the Night hi-viz vest to wear on the challenge. It is essential that you have working front and rear bicycle lights for the duration of the challenge and that you bring spare batteries for them. We recommend that you wear additional hi-viz clothing.

on the night

You will be set off in groups of 75 women at two-minute intervals to take on your 50km or 100km route around London. You can select your distance and start time when registering (9.00pm, 9.30pm, 10 pm or 10.30pm). Each start wave has a limited number of spaces, so please register now to secure your preferred start time.

Both the 50km and 100km route will take you past loads of iconic London landmarks, which will look even more beautiful all lit up at night.

The 50km route won't be circular but will end in the lights of Central London (venue TBC) - and a crew of wonderful volunteers and staff will be there to congratulate you as you pedal those last few metres! There, our free shuttle busses will drive you and your bike from the finish point back to Windsor. If you would prefer to travel directly from your starting point back home, please feel free to make your own travel arrangements.

We'll have Feed Stations along the way (details TBC) with a variety of tasty, free snacks and drinks (with vegan and gluten free options available) to keep you energised throughout the challenge. Each Feed Station will also have first aid support, bike mechanics and toilet facilities.

Ride the Night is not a race and there are no event timings. We anticipate that faster cyclists will complete the 100km route in about five hours, whilst slower cyclists will take up to ten hours. The 50km route should take around three to five hours.

The cut off time is 7am on Sunday morning, but no-one will be left behind, as we will have a sweeper van behind the final group of cyclists.
