Organiser's Description
Share the Road Gran Fondo - 20th Anniversary
The inaugural Share the Road ride was hosted in 2006 following the death of OPP Sergeant Greg Stobbart who tragically lost his life while on a training ride in Milton Ontario. This year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of this annual event on the same roads that Greg trained on, departing from the Mattamy National Cycling Centre which is just south of where Greg lost his life to a careless driver. The mission of the Share the Road Cycling Coalition (The Coalition) is to build safer roads and stronger communities through advocacy, education, and legislative change. The Coalition works with partners across Ontario to improve understanding between motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians — and to create roads where people who ride today, and the children who will learn to ride tomorrow, can choose to ride their bike more often, and travel safely and confidently. For two decades, the Share the Road Cycling Coalition has worked to improve cycling infrastructure, advance legislation, and make active transportation a priority across the province. And whether it’s the legislation we’ve passed - Greg’s Law, the One Metre Safe Passing Law or enhanced penalties for collisions where vulnerable road users are involved - we have a track record of success that has been possible because of the support of our partners, funders and donors. When you register for the 20th Anniversary Share the Road Gran Fondo, you are doing more than signing up for a great day on the bike. You are riding with purpose. And new this year - your impact will give the next generation healthy habits for life. The proceeds from this year’s Gran Fondo will support the launch of Bikeability for Ontario—a new cycling-skills education program based on the successful UK-based program, that will give children the confidence, safety knowledge, and lifelong habits to ride safely.Through our network of Bicycle Friendly Communities, working with our colleagues in the UK, and with our amazing road safety partners, we are preparing to launch pilot programs in municipalities in Ontario that will give children and their parents the chance to choose cycling, and embrace the opportunity to build the confidence and independence that cycling skills education can bring. Our next step will be to scale up the program, province wide. Registration for the Share the Road Gran Fondo is $250, which consists of a $125 event registration fee for our fully supported Ride as well as post-event meal and refreshments, and a $125 charitable contribution that directly supports our work to make roads and communities safer across Ontario. The charitable portion is eligible for a tax receipt, and you’ll receive it automatically through Race Roster once your registration is complete.Your participation — and your charitable gift — make this event possible. Thank you. On September 20th, you'll enjoy fully supported 40 km, 80 km, or 110 km routes through the Halton Hills, while supporting work that continues long after your ride ends.
When cyclists ride together, we build safer communities — for today’s riders and tomorrow’s. Join us to make Ontario safer - and more welcoming - for everyone who rides.
