AdaptAbilities is a disability charity started in 2004, which has grown to five locations in the Edmonton region. They offer a safe space and trained staff to support children, youth, and adults with a variety of disabilities including Autism, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, Down Syndrome, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, Anxiety disorders, and many more. Through their programming, their participants socialize with new people, develop long-lasting friendships, learn essential life skills, and increase their confidence and independence.
It's also important that families of people with disabilities get a well-earned break from caregiving to handle everyday tasks, keep their jobs, and enjoy more time with loved ones. This respite time alleviates stress, improves quality of life, and preserves relationships within the families AdaptAbilities serves.
AdaptAbilities has a lot of different programs but I've listed a few of the most impactful ones below:โข Hearts in Action Summer Camps - run throughout the summer, Christmas, spring break, and during teachersโ professional development days while parents workโข Out-of-School Care - caring for children and youth when they are not in school, but their parents are at work; offered weekdays throughout the school yearโข Community Connect โ a weekday program for young adults with disabilities to help them reach their full potential through essential life skills training, expressive arts, relationship development, recreation activities, and involvement in the community (volunteering & employment)โข All the program descriptions can be found on their website: https://adaptabilities.ca/registration/
AdaptAbilities is actively making a huge difference in the lives of people with disabilities, for their parents and families, and the Edmonton community. They have plans to expand their services to Red Deer and Calgary within the next five years and aim to serve 10,000 Albertan participants by 2035!
