Event summary

Join us on Saturday, July 26, 2025, for the remarkable Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Swim in Paradise, Chippewa! This extraordinary event commemorates the 50th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior, a maritime disaster that claimed 29 lives and inspired the iconic song by Gordon Lightfoot.

In a tribute to the fallen mariners, a limited number of 68 swimmers will embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey, participating in a historic 17-stage, 411-mile relay swim. The route retraces the intended path of the ship, symbolically delivering iron ore pellets from the same dock in Superior, Wisconsin, where the Edmund Fitzgerald took on its last load. This unique experience not only honors the legacy of those lost but also offers swimmers the chance to be part of a documentary film, capturing the spirit of this unforgettable event. Don't miss the opportunity to make history and celebrate the resilience of the human spirit in the beautiful waters of Lake Superior!

Organiser's Description

The _EDMUND FITZGERALD MEMORIAL SWIM_ presents epic once-in-a-lifetime experiences for up to 68 swimmers to be part of history, play a role in a documentary film, and swim where no one has ever swum before and may never swim again.

The year 2025 marks 50 years since the _Edmund Fitzgerald_, bound for Detroit with over 26,000 tons of iron ore, went down in that horrific 1975 Lake Superior gale, taking 29 souls with her. Immortalized in Gordon Lightfoots _Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald_, this has become the world's most famous shipwreck not named _Titanic_.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of this historic maritime tragedy and to pay tribute to the 29 lost mariners, open water swimmers plan to carry on their legacy with a 17-stage, 411-mile relay swim from the point where the _Edmund Fitzgerald_ lies in Lake Superior to Detroit. Participating swimmers will symbolically complete the intended route and cargo delivery that the ship was tragically unable to complete on that fateful night 50 years ago, by passing between them iron ore pellets from the same dock in Superior, Wisconsin, where the "Big Fitz" took on its last load.
