BACKGROUND ON RUNTHECITY
Boca Raton Councilman Andy Thomson first had the idea to pick up trash while jogging on New Years Day 2019, when he made a resolution to run more. On his first run, he noticed all sorts of trash on the streets, so he began bringing a trash bag and cleaning up the streets on his morning runs. He later started bringing his kids, who love the experience and help point out trash as they go.
In 2021, Andy set out to get to know ALL of Boca Raton better by running every mile of every street in the City - all 475 miles - and make them cleaner and safer as he went. Hundreds of volunteers assisted in the effort and, all told, the RunTheCity initiative collected nearly 1,300 pounds of trash and identified 375 safety improvements. After running/cleaning/improving the entire city roadway in 2021, Andy has continued the RunTheCity movement and cant wait for residents to participate in the inaugural RunTheCity Virtual 5K!
