Get ready for a thrilling experience at the Spook Hill Cider & Wine 4 Mile Run, originally set to take place in picturesque Burkittsville, Frederick from May 8th to May 31st, 2025. This vibrant event was designed to combine the joy of running with the delightful atmosphere of cider and wine tasting, making it a perfect outing for both avid runners and those looking to enjoy a fun-filled day.
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances related to property availability along the racecourse, the event has been canceled for this year. Participants who had registered will either be deferred to the 2026 Makin' Hay event, receive a full refund, or have the option to donate their fees to support local initiatives. While we’re disappointed that this year’s race won’t happen, we’re hopeful for the future and encourage everyone to stay tuned for more exciting events to come. The Spook Hill Cider & Wine 4 Mile Run may be on hold, but the spirit of community and camaraderie remains strong!

ALL OF THOSE WHO WERE REGISTERED FOR THE EVENT HAVE NOW EITHER BEEN DEFERRED TO THE '26 MAKIN' HAY, HAD THEIR REGISTRATION FEES REFUNDED, OR AT THEIR REQUEST OUTRIGHT DONATED THE FEES PAID TO S.M.H.S.
WHY ARE WE PULLING THE PLUG? THE SHORT ANSWER IS THAT ONE OF THE KEY LANDOWNERS ON THE COURSE HAS JUST PUT THEIR PROPERTY ON THE MARKET. SMHS CANNOT AFFORD TO INCUR FURTHER EXPENSES FOR THE RACE WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF HAVING TO TURN AROUND, CANCEL, THEN OFFER REFUNDS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS REGISTERED IF THE NEW OWNERS ARE NOT AMENABLE TO OUR TRAVERSING THE PROPERTY.
HECK, THE PLACE MAY NOT EVEN SELL, BUT SMHS SIMPLY CANNOT TAKE THE FINANCIAL RISK OF PLANNING, CONTRACTING FOR GOODS AND SERVICES, AND THEN HAVE TO PULL THE PLUG. WE ARE TOO SMALL AN ORGANIZATION TO BE ABLE TO ABSORB SUCH A FINANCIAL HIT.
IVE ALWAYS PRIDED MYSELF ON GIVING OUR RUNNERS A GREAT COURSE AND A WONDERFUL, INCLUSIVE RACE-DAY EXPERIENCE. I THINK SPOOK HILL TICKED ALL OF THOSE BOXES (AS DOES MAKIN HAY ON A SMALLER SCALE!). IM SORRY THAT WE WONT BE ABLE TO GIVE THIS EXPERIENCE TO YOU THIS YEAR. SADLY, SMHS IS NOT CURRENTLY PLANNING ON RESURRECTING THE RACE IN THE FUTURE, BUT WE NEVER KNOW WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS

CLOSEDWelcome to the nationally recognized (Runner's World Magazine-twice and Competitor.com), Spook Hill Cider & Wine 4 Mile Run! The footing on this scenic course varies from pavement and gravel to grassy and occasionally uneven cross-country conditions. The orchard, farm, and vineyard portions of the official Spook Hill course are private property and are OFF LIMITS except for those participating in the race on race day. Sorry, no strollers or dogs are permitted. Due to budgetary constraints, we are not offering finisher's medals in '25. Those registering on or prior to Sept. 28th will be guaranteed a tri-blend, short-sleeved, Spook Hill tee shirt. Finishers will receive a commemorative wine glass as they cross the finish line. *Our only pre-race early packet pickup event will occur on the Wednesday prior to the race between 3 and 6:30 pm at Charm City Run, Frederick. https://www.charmcityrun.com/shop/locations/frederick/ Race day packet pickup begins on race morning at 0700 and extends through 0820. CLOSEDOur 3-Mile Walk will take you through historic Burkittsville, Boordy's South Mountain Vineyard, the historic Burkittsville Union Cemetery, and across South Mountain Creamery farmland before bringing you back to the Burkittsville Ruritan. Walkers will not be eligible for performance-based awards, though they will receive a finisher's wine glass and be eligible for door prizes (must be present to win).
