This uplifting race kicks off at 12 pm at Julia Davis Park, honoring the memory of Susan Elaine Brubaker Newby, affectionately known as SueB. A vibrant community figure, SueB's legacy is celebrated through this event, which aims to raise awareness about domestic violence and empower women to seek help.
Participants in the 5K will receive a complimentary t-shirt (register by September 15th to claim yours), while the event also features a resource fair beginning at 10:30 am, showcasing valuable community services. Families can enjoy a scavenger hunt for children under 12, complete with gold medals for participants, alongside fun activities like a bounce house, food vendors, and live music from The Midnight Jazz Cats. Registration opens on the day of the race, and 100% of race fees support the WCA's ongoing efforts to combat domestic abuse. Who was SueB?
A vivacious, intelligent woman who is missed dearly every day. February 9, 1955 April 4, 2008
Susan Elaine Brubaker Newby died in 2008 during a mysterious horseback riding incident. After her death, family, and friends realized that SueB her nickname was likely in an abusive marriage. SueBs sister, Marj, and friends, Leslie and Teresa turned to the WCA as a way to honor SueBs life and increase awareness about domestic violence. Their hope: to help other successful, smart, beautiful women like SueB leave these relationships before its too late.
Continuing to honor the memory of Susan Sue B Newby, The Sue B 5K race will be in its 15th year in 2024 kicking off on Sunday, October 6th at 12 pm at Julia Davis Park. Participants running the event will start at exactly 12pm. Each participant will receive a free t-shirt, deadline to receive a free shirt is September 15th.
In addition to the race, there will be a community resource fair starting at 10:30 that is open to the public. This is an opportunity to discover and learn about the fantastic resources that our community has to offer. Raising awareness and encouraging important discussions about domestic abuse has always been a passion of Sues family and friends. A scavenger hunt centered around the WCA's services and resources will also be available for children 12 and under. Participants will meet at the rose garden at 11am and will each receive a gold medal after completing the scavenger hunt.
REGISTRATION WILL OPEN DAY-OF THE RACE AT 10:30AM.
In addition to the scavenger hunt and resource fair there will be a bounce house for kids, food vendors, a photo-booth, therapy animals, and live performance from The Midnight Jazz Cats [https://www.themidnightjazzcatsboise.com/] from 12:30-2:30pm. Registration is required for the race but the event is free for attendees.
100% OF RACE FEES SUPPORT OUR ENDOWMENT FUND TO ENSURE THE WCA CAN MAINTAIN OUR SERVICES AND SERVE OUR CLIENTS FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. THE OBJECT OF THIS ENDOWMENT IS TO PROVIDE FUNDS IN PERPETUITY FOR THE OPERATION OF ALL OF THE WCAS PROGRAMS TO PROVIDE SAFETY, HEALING, AND FREEDOM FROM DOMESTIC ABUSE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT.
