Get ready for an exhilarating weekend at The Master of the Mountains Adventure Race/Relay, taking place from September 12th to 13th, 2025, in the stunning Raton, Colfax area of Northeastern New Mexico. Participants will kick off with a trail run of approximately 6 miles through the rugged terrain of Sugarite Canyon State Park, followed by a 3-mile paddle on the scenic Lake Maloya at an impressive elevation of 7,500 feet.
But the excitement doesn't stop there! Competitors will then bike roughly 15 miles over rough dirt roads, climbing to an elevation of 8,500 feet as they cross into Southern Colorado. Finally, put your skills to the test with a challenging shotgun shooting course at Trinidad State College's Prator Gun Range. Whether you choose to go solo or form a relay team, this event promises camaraderie, competition, and a whole lot of fun. With divisions for solo competitors and relay teams of all kinds, there's a place for everyone to experience the thrill of mastering the mountains! Organiser's Description
The Master of the Mountains Adventure Relay challenges competitors from across the country to "master the mountains". Run through the rugged terrain of Sugarite Canyon State Park in Northeastern New Mexico, paddle a course on Lake Maloya at 7,500 feet, bike up to 8,500 feet over San Francisco Pass and into Southern Colorado, then prove your prowess on a challenging shotgun shooting course at Trinidad State College's Prator Gun Range.
(Originally known as the Master of the Mountains or the "MOM", then rebranded Purgatory 4 for a couple years and now back to its roots, the "MOM" starts in New Mexico with the run and paddle and then crosses into Colorado for the biking and shooting events. The final celebratory fun will be at the gun range.)
