Join Dana McHugh at Calla's 5k Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk for T1D on Saturday, November 2, 2024, in Scranton, Lackawanna. This event is a fundraiser in honor of Dana's daughter Calla, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The 5k race will have winners in various age groups, and there will also be an untimed 1 mile walk. All proceeds will go to Breakthrough T1D, formerly JDRF, to fund research for type 1 diabetes. Register by September 30th to receive a race t-shirt and come early to purchase raffle tickets. Donors over $250 received by October 1st will be recognized on the race shirts. Dear Runner/Walker,
Thank you for considering taking part in our fundraiser. My name is Dana McHugh. This past October my daughter Calla was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Our lives as we knew it completely changed. Those initial days in the hospital were difficult. It broke my heart when Calla said to me, Mom, why did you bring me here when I wasnt even sick? Little did she know she was sick and showing symptoms for quite some time. Calla is going to be 7 this October and she will be a year into this new life. She is thriving and doing what all other little girls do! She loves to dance, swim, cheer, play softball, etc My hope is that there is a cure in Callas lifetime so that she does not have to rely on injections and have a constant worry of blood sugar levels. Together we pray that there will be advances in medicine to increase the quality of life for all people with type one diabetes! I am holding this 5K/Walk in honor of my strong and beautiful daughter so that she can see she is not alone and that there are many people out in the world supporting her and the millions of people with T1D!
We will have a 5K race with winners in various age groups. There will also be an untimed 1 mile walk. Come early to purchase some raffle tickets! Raffle winners will be announced along with our top finishers of the race.
All proceeds will go to Breakthrough T1D, formerly JDRF. Breakthrough T1D is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a persons pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that controls blood-sugar levels. People with T1D need to check their blood sugar levels and self-administer insulin multiple times a day every day for the rest of their lives. Breakthrough T1Ds goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from peoples lives until we achieve a world without it.
