A one-day membership can be purchased as part of the registration process for $20. Participant Cap: 240 swimmers Registration: Sign up quickly, as the swim typically sells out. Signing up early will also mean that you will avoid fee increases. As part of online registration, you may purchase a one-day USMS membership. You MUST choose this option if you are not already a USMS member. Only pre-registered swimmers may participate. No substitutions or race nday registrations are allowed. Water temperature: Water temperature has historically been 70 degrees or above but can vary based on spring air temperatures. Wet suits are allowed unless the water temperature exceeds 78 degrees (per USMS rules). This swim is not for novices. It is for experienced open-water swimmers only. At a minimum, you should be able to swim one mile comfortably in under 40 minutes. Refunds, substitutions, deferments, credits, and transfers cannot be provided according to the swimmer's request under any circumstances. Refunds of 50% of the registration fee will be offered only in the case of a full cancellation of the swim (e.g., if the swim does not take place in 2026). Age requirement: 18 years minimum Kayakers and lifeguards will provide support during the race Fluorescent swim caps will be provided and must be worn for safety reasons Mandatory Athlete check-in from 6:45 am to 7:20 am. All swimmers must bring an ID and USMS membership card if already a 2026 member. Pre-race announcement at 7:40 am Start 8 am Bag-check available CAUTION This swim is not for novices; this event is for experienced open-water swimmers only. You should be able to swim one mile comfortably in a pool in under 40 minutes. RACE STATUS The race is dependent on weather conditions and may be postponed or canceled under adverse conditions. Swimmers may encounter random jetsam and flotsam in the river. In the event of heavy or prolonged rainfall, the swim may be canceled. In that case, we will send out an e-mail the day before the race and have a notice on this website. FUN STUFF We will provide electronic chip timing with immediate, accurate results. All participants will also receive a free t-shirt with registration and post-race refreshments. Awards will be given in ten-year age increments. You will also receive bragging rights for having swam a mile in the Charles River! DIRECTIONS We suggest you arrive by public transportation, biking or walking. The closest MBTA station is the Charles/MGH Station on the Red Line or Arlington or Copley Station on the Green Line. Volunteers will greet persons crossing the Arthur Fiedler footbridge or the Charles/MGH footbridge. Parking is available at the Boston Common garage for a fee or at nearby meters (note, it may be difficult for swimmers to feed meters given the timing of the event).
