Join us for the Herscher Hare & Tortoise 5K Race and 2 Mile Fun Walk on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in the charming town of Herscher, Kankakee! This exciting event kicks off near the Herscher High School football field, where check-in begins at 4:00 PM and runs until 5:00 PM. Participants can look forward to a flat, mostly shaded course winding through the picturesque streets of Herscher, marked with arrows to guide your way.
Whether you’re a competitive runner or just want to enjoy a leisurely stroll, there’s something for everyone! The 5K features various age divisions with awards for the top finishers, and every participant in the first 150 to cross the finish line will receive a special finisher medal. Don’t miss the non-competitive 2 Mile Fun Walk, where the first 10 finishers will also earn awards. Plus, little ones can join in the fun with the Bunny Dash, an exciting dash for kids aged 7 and under! After the race, enjoy refreshments and celebrate at the annual Labor Day dance, complete with a beer tent and delicious ice cream treats. Mark your calendars for a day filled with fitness

Organiser's Description
Location: Check-in and start of race will be near the Herscher High School football field, located just south of the intersection of Illinois Route 115 and N. Elm St. All runners and walkers should check in between 4:00 and 5:00.
Course Description: Both the 5K and 2 mile Fun Walk take place on Herschers streets. The course is flat and mostly shaded. The course will be marked with arrows on the streets. There will be traffic on the streets, so participants need to be careful. Refreshments will be provided after the race.
Registration Fee: 5K Race And Fun Walk: Through 3:00PM on Sep. 5: $25 per person. Race day: $25 per person. Bunny Dash: No charge
* Kankakee Running Club Members get a $2 discount! Must be registered by 1:00pm on Aug. 24th to be guaranteed a shirt. We do order extras, but no guarantee of size or availability after the cutoff date/time.
5K Age Divisions and Awards: Male and Female: Awards to the first , second and third place finishers in each: Overall / 14 & younger / 15-19 / 20-24 / 25-29 / 30-34 / 35-39 / 40-44 / 45-49 / 50-54 / 55-59 / 60-64 / 65-69 / 70-74 / 75 & older.
NEW THIS YEAR: SPECIAL FINISHER MEDAL TO THE FIRST 150 FINISHERS, RUNNERS OR WALKERS.
Fun Walk Awards: 2 mile non-competitive Fun Walk with an award to the first 10 finishers. NOTE: If you enter as a walker, you must WALK ONLY. NO RUNNING AT ALL. NO SPRINTING TO THE FINISH LINE.
Bunny Dash: The Bunny Dash for kids 7 and under will be on the track and will start immediately after the completion of the 5K/Fun Walk. No registration is needed. They will be called down to the track after the race. There will be prize bags.
Other Information: Race finishes near Herscher High School football field. Police traffic control during the race at major intersections, but participants need to be watchful for traffic throughout the course. Awards presented at the football field after the race.

A day-long celebration begins on Monday, with Herschers Labor Day Parade starting at 10:30 AM. Use your bib number after the race to get one free beer at the beer tent and/or get $1 off at the Oberweiss Ice Cream stand.
