This inspiring event honors the legacy of Joe Mike Baker, a beloved member of the Sandy Bottom Community who had a passion for running. The day will feature a spirited 5K race and a fun run, encouraging participants of all ages to run, walk, or volunteer in celebration of community and remembrance. Since its inception, this event has raised over $31,500 for scholarships, benefiting 32 South Lenoir High School students pursuing their dreams and giving back to their community, just as Joe Mike did.
The festivities kick off at 8:00 AM at South Lenoir High School, and we invite everyone to come out to support this noble cause. Awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers in various age groups, making it a competitive yet friendly atmosphere. This memorial race is held in memory of Joe Mike Baker. Joe Mike lived and worked in the Sandy Bottom Community. He had many hobbies such as bowling, hunting, fishing and sports; however, he fell in love with running. At the time of his accidental death in September 2014, he was training for his first half marathon. As a tribute and to honor his memory, family and friends organized the JMB Memorial 5K and Fun Run to raise money for scholarships for high school seniors who plan to use their education to give back to their community just as Joe Mike did. Through the generous donations of the sponsors and commitment of the runners and volunteers, since 2016, the JMB Memorial 5K and Fun Run has awarded more than $31,500.00 in scholarships to 32 South Lenoir High School students.
