Organiser's Description
The Surgery Interest Group at the University of Virginia is hosting a 5K in support of the Global Surgery Foundationa nonprofit committed to improving access to surgical care worldwide through global partnerships, innovative financing, and local empowerment. The Foundation focuses on saving lives and strengthening health systems in vulnerable communities where surgical care remains limited. In 2023, the Global Surgery Foundation expanded access to surgical care for 4.3 million individuals, directly served 10,700 patients, and trained 3,900 healthcare workers across low- and middle-income countries.
Inspired by this mission, we are proud to launch an annual 5K to support the Global Surgery Foundation and its lifesaving work. Through this initiative, we hope to contribute to a world where safe, timely, and essential surgical care is accessible to all.
