The long, mountainous, and forested shoreline of the Tongass Narrows waterway is the setting for the annual springtime running of Ketchikans Totem to Totem Half Marathon, a 13.1+ mile race that takes runners along an out and back course that starts and finishes at Potlatch Park on Totem Bight Road.
The race begins at Potlatch Park and takes runners and walkers north along Tongass Highway for about 2 miles before taking a loop on Pond Reef Road and returning to North Tongass Highway all the way to the north end of Knudson Cove Road. Participants will take a short jaunt on the gravel road to North Point Higgins road where they will make their way to the elementary school parking lot as the turn around point.
Tracing straight back on North Point Higgins Road to North Tongass Highway, runners will cross the highway and head south on the shoulder until they join the bike path at Whipple Creek. The route follows the bike path southbound until the marked crossing at Totem Bight Road. Crossing the highway again, runners will make their way to the finish line at Potlatch Park.
The race takes runners along beautiful vistas with tree-covered mountains along the Tongass Highway, where runners can expect to see local wildlife as well as boats streaming along the water in the narrows all along the race route.
The event is open to both RUNNERS AND WALKERS and usually features a smaller field of participants, as the race usually sees between 100 and 200 runners and walkers cross the finish line.
