DESCRIPTION
Active Desi is a social group initiated in Charlotte NC, whose mission is to focus on fitness, well-being and active lifestyle for people of South Asian origin living abroad. Needless to say, this challenge is open to EVERYONE because our goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle by bringing this event to our entire community.
Under the Miles For Greater Good program, we periodically organize events and challenges that are exercise, fitness or wellness related and contribute to the greater good.

Our fourth event under the "Miles for Greater Good" series is 7.77 miles for Greater Good
Join us in this worthy cause to support our "running Warrier" Smita Warrier as she embarks on an epic world race to run - 7 MARATHONS IN 7 CONTINENTS IN 7 DAYS and raise money to support SAKHI - an organization based in the slums of Mumbai, India.

Since 2008, Sakhi has been leading educational classes for slum girls from grades 1-8. Their main objective is to focus on literacy and numeracy skills, while also building life skills. The hope is that every slum girl will be able to continue her studies with confidence and receive quality education.

Youth participants will additionally receive 25 voluntary hours for their race participation & promoting awareness via our event page, the mission of the charity supported. An electronic certificate will be provided for each of the youth participant after the end of the race.

SAKHI
SAKHIs mission is to create quality learning spaces at the community level, so that every girl in the slums of Mumbai and rural villages of Osmanabad, India, will get an opportunity to continue her education with confidence. SAKHI means a female friend of girls who inspires, guides, and supports other girls for a good cause.
SAKHIs major objective is to provide a girls learning space, aimed specifically at those girls who are living and learning in difficult situations, so that they have an opportunity to receive quality education in a secure environment.
The stable and reliable basic educational capacity of SAKHIs learning space provides life skills to the girls and allows them to learn with confidence. Initially, these slum and rural area girls were struggling to read and write, their vocabulary level was poor, their confidence and motivation to learn was very low, and therefore they were not able to participate actively in their schools daily class activities.

OUR STORY
In 2021, we initiated a program called Miles For Greater Good to raise funds and support non-profit health, fitness, and wellness organizations supporting South Asian communities. In its first three years we planned and contributed funds (more than $14,000) to several non-profit organizations including,
