Kick off the new year with an invigorating adventure at the First Day Hike, hosted by the Piney Woods Conservation Group on Thursday, January 1, 2026. Set against the stunning backdrop of Wiggins, Perry, this scenic trek along the Black Creek National Recreation Trail invites participants to embrace their 2026 fitness goals while soaking in the beauty of nature.

This enjoyable out-and-back hike will cover approximately 3 to 4 miles over the course of 2.5 to 3 hours, showcasing breathtaking views of Black Creek, vibrant fall foliage, and the remarkable Mill Creek waterfallβ€”one of only two in the expansive 519,000-acre De Soto National Forest. With relatively flat terrain and modest elevation gains, this hike is perfect for all skill levels. Just bring your enthusiasm for the great outdoors, along with comfortable footwear, water, snacks, and a sense of adventure. Join us at 10 am for a fresh start to the year filled with family, friends, and the joys of nature!

PWCG is hosting a First Day Hike on New Year's Day!!!

Start the new year with adventure by joining us for the _First Day Hike_ on New Year's Day 2026! This scenic trek on the Black Creek National Recreation Trail is a great way to embrace your new fitness goals, spend time with family and friends, and connect with nature. Lace up your hiking boots and kickoff the year in the great outdoors!

This section of the trail is within the Black Creek Wilderness, the largest federally-designated wilderness area in the state AND home to one of only two waterfalls in the entire 519,000 acre De Soto National Forest - Mill Creek. No experience necessary - just bring your appetite for adventure (and maybe some snacks for the hike *and* after).

Approximately 3.00-4.00 miles out-and-back
2.5 - 3.0 hours

Views of Black Creek, fall foliage, Mill Creek and an impressive multi-shoot waterfall, relatively flat terrain with modest elevation gain in sections and a creek crossing via fallen tree (a BIG one!).
