Florence & Edward Drummond Libbey founded the Toledo Museum of Art and their endowment continues to fund the gem of the 419. http://libbeyhouse.org/history-the-libbeys/ Florence Scott Libbey's devoted husband Edward was born on April 17, 1854, in Chelsea Massachusetts. Edwards father, William Langdon Libbey operated a glass manufacturing plant. When his father died, Edward took over the business. It has been said that Edward wanted to become a preacher. Florence Scott Libbey was born in 1858 in New York to Maurice Scott and Mary Tallant Scott. Unfortunately Mary died sometime after Florence's birth. Florence's grandfather, Jesup Scott invested in land in the Toledo area and began soliciting businesses to come to Toledo to utilize our natural resources (natural gas and Silica) and water ways (Lake Erie and Maumee River). In 1888 Edward Libbey came to Toledo and built The Libbey Class Co. In 1890 he met Florence Scott, who by this time was a well educated art collector and heiress to the Scott fortune. Edward and Florence were married at Florence's father's mansion built on land she will later donate to build The Toledo Museum of Art.
