Commencing at 14 minutes for the initial mile, the return time steadily decreases: 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 minutes. Fail to beat the cutoff time, and you're out of the race. The ultimate victor is the first runner to successfully meet the final cutoff time.
