Organiser's Description
_SHONTO, ARIZONA SATURDAY, JUNE 20_
_START TIME: 7:00 A.M._
Y'A''AT''E'EH RUNNERS! WELCOME TO THE RAIL-TRAIL DUATHLON
The Rail-Trail Duathlon is a unique summertime running and biking experience on the rail-trail route near Shonto, AZ
REGISTRATION Online registration for the event is now open and will remain open through 8 p.m. on Friday, June 19, and again onsite race morning . Registration price is determined by age. 18 and Under is $10. Adults are $40.
Your registration included an event t-shirt, a Rail-Trail towel, poster, sticker, and finishers medal, along with course support, portable toilets, live music and a community fun run. You may opt to do the event with a partner and run as a relay: one of you runs, the other rides. If you select the team option, you would each register at the $40 rate and notify us as to who is running which leg.
COURSE & AID STATIONS Both the riding and running will take place on the rail-trail paralleling the Black Mesa & Lake Powell rail bed. Participants will bike five miles out from Shonto, and then ditch the bike and put on trail shoes for a 10K+ trail run leg. Once participants get back to their bikes, they will saddle up and bike back five miles to Shonto.
Aid stations will include Honey Stinger energy gels, salty and sweet snacks along with fresh fruit, Gatorade and water. The course is subject to revision, at the discretion of race organizers and/or local leaders. Alternative routes may be utilized in case of bad weather.
RUNNER RESPONSIBILITIES: Runners will need to be prepared for warm summertime weather conditions and have the appropriate gear to accommodate such conditions. While thunderstorms are unlikely, they are possible. Major stormy weather could leave participants exposed and traversing a muddy, sticky surface. Appropriate raingear and footwear is important. Hypothermia and heat issues can both pose a real threat in the high desert in the fall season, and runners must be prepared for the potential onset of such conditions. Aid stations will have large quantities of fluids; however, runners should plan to bring their own hydration system.
LODGING/CAMPING One of he hidden gems of the rez is a campground less than half an hour from the start line at Navajo National Monument. If you are looking for a motel for Friday or Saturday nights, the communities of Kayenta, Tuba City and Page, Arizona (each about two hours from the high school) have multiple lodging options. The new LaQuinta Hotel in Shonto is scheduled to be open in June, so you may want to check on that.
AWARDS Overall and age-group awards will be presented to the top finishers and age-group awards.
WEATHER June weather is likely to be cool at the start time, but will warm up quickly as the day goes on.
The Rail-Trail Duathlon is organized by the nonprofit organization NavajoYES
