WHAT IS SARCOIDOSIS? _Sarcoidosis_ is an inflammatory disease characterized by the formation of small clusters of inflammatory cells, known as granulomas, in various organs of the body, most commonly affecting the lungs, lymph nodes, skin, and eyes. The exact cause is unknown, but it is thought to result from an abnormal immune response, possibly triggered by environmental factors, infections, or genetic predisposition. Symptoms can vary widely based on the organs involved and may include persistent cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and skin lesions. Sarcoidosis can affect individuals of any age but is most common in adults between 20 and 40 years old, with a higher prevalence in women and among African Americans compared to Caucasians. Diagnosis typically involves a medical history assessment, physical exams, imaging tests, and sometimes biopsies of affected tissues. While mild cases may not require treatment, more severe cases often necessitate corticosteroids or other medications to reduce inflammation.
