Organiser's Description
WHAT IS THIS
Are you looking to get your feet wet with Adventure Racing, or you're a veteran yearning for AR activities local to Southern California?
Join the next SCAT in San Diego, based out of gorgeous Mission Bay. The start line location will be in Mission Bay. For families, beginners, and those short on time, there will be a 3-hour course. For others, there is a 10-hour course, but of course you can tailor the course down to your skill level, and with winner(s) clearing the course by getting all checkpoints in the least amount of time.
While the course is being designed, please rest assured that on the 10-hour course there will be 1) mountain biking trails, 2) hiking/running, and 3) paddling. Of course, you'll need to use a map (and compass?) to navigate your way, with zero use of GPS allowed. However, bringing a camera is highly encouraged.
TIMELINE
* Friday 6:00-8 Potluck and gear swap at Campland at the Bay
* Bring a dish to share and any gear you want to give to other athletes -- this can be running, biking, paddling, or navigation/orienteering related
* 6:30-7 Adventure racing navigation clinic
* Saturday, De Anza Cove Park
* 7 10-hour course starts
* 9 3-hour course starts
* 12 3-hour course ends
* 5 10-hour course ends
GEAR
* BYOB (Bring Your Own Boat). Kayak rentals (tandem and/or single) are available from two locations:
* Campland at the Bay (pricey but very close to the start/finish)
* Aqua Adventures located on Quivera Way (cheaper, but further, but maybe willing to open early to rent to you)
* Another BYOB (...Bike) - a mountain bike is ideal otherwise you will be walking a road bike a lot.
* Food and water - you'll be able to resupply at the start location, but if you're on the 10-hr course, plan to carry 5-6 hours worth of food (about 200 calories/hour) during the longest segment; feel free to bring a credit card on you in case you want to stop at a convenience store for more bottled water or food.
* Compass, of any type really - at least to help with coarse direction and not end up too disoriented.
COURSE ESTIMATES
Detailed race section times to come as the course is vetted.
