Get ready to lace up your shoes and embark on an exciting journey with the PGRC Early Bird 5K Training program, kicking off on Saturday, March 8th, 2025! Held in the beautiful Greenbelt area of Prince George's County, this 12-week base-building program is perfect for walkers and beginner runners looking to embrace a more active lifestyle. Participants will train to complete a 5K (3.1 miles) event, either by walking or incorporating easy-paced running.
Join us for three group workouts each week, starting at 8:00 AM on Saturdays at various locations around the county, with evening sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the University of Maryland's Kehoe Track and Herbert Wells Ice Arena. This supportive training environment, guided by RRCA-certified running coaches, ensures you'll have a fantastic experience as you prepare for the DCRCC Women's Distance Festival and other exciting target events. Whether you're just starting out or returning to fitness, this program will help you reach your goals while making new friends along the way!

EARLY BIRD 5K IS A 12-WEEK BASE-BUILDING PROGRAM FOR WALKERS AND BEGINNING RUNNERS WHO ARE COMING BACK TO OR STARTING AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE. THIS PROGRAM TRAINS PARTICIPANTS TO COMPLETE A 5K (3.1 MILE) EVENT AS A WALK OR A COMBINATION OF WALKING AND EASY PACE RUNNING. IT IS COACHED BY RRCA-CERTIFIED RUNNING COACHES.

FIRST MEETING IS AT HERBERT WELL'S ICE RINK IN COLLEGE PARK.
_PROGRAM STRUCTURE:_ THE TRAINING CONSISTS OF THREE (3) GROUP WORKOUTS PER WEEK. PARTICIPANTS TRAIN AS A GROUP WITH HEAD COACHES AND PACE LEADERS ON TUESDAY AND THURSDAY EVENINGS AND SUNDAY MORNINGS.
_TUESDAY EVENING TRAINING RUN:_ BEGINS AT 6:30PM. TRAINING WILL BE HELD AT KEHOE TRACK, UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, COLLEGE PARK.
_THURSDAY EVENING TRAINING RUN:_ BEGINS AT 6:30PM. TRAINING RUNS WILL BE HELD AT THE HERBERT WELLS ICE ARENA IN COLLEGE PARK (PARK NEAR TRAIL ENTRANCE FAR END OF LOT).
_SATURDAY MORNING TRAINING RUN: _BEGINS AT 8:00AM. TRAINING WILL BE HELD AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS AROUND THE COUNTY.
_TARGET EVENT:_ DCRCC WOMEN'S DISTANCE FESTIVAL/ MEN'S RUN. THE HOWARD COUNTY STRIDERS WOMEN'S DISTANCE FESTIVAL MAY ALSO BE USED AS A TARGET EVENT.
_PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:_ AGES 18 AND UP WITH THE ABILITY TO WALK AND WILLINGNESS TO RUN. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST BE A CURRENT MEMBER OR JOIN PGRC. MEMBERSHIP PRINCE GEORGE'S RUNNING CLUB (PGRC.ORG).
_MEDICAL CLEARANCE:_ IF YOU ARE UNDER MEDICAL CARE, HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION OR HAVE NOT EXERCISED RECENTLY, WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU SECURE A CLEARANCE FROM YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE PARTICIPATING IN THIS OR ANY TRAINING PROGRAM.
