Organiser's Description
Victory Over Violence is an annual event organized by The Womens Center of Tarrant County to raise both funds and awareness in support of The Womens Centers many anti-violence initiatives. The 2024 Walk/Run will be the 27th annual event in the races history, thanks to the generous support of thousands of individuals and many corporate and community sponsors throughout the years.
The event brings more than 2,000 people of all ages together to show their support, participate in both the Fun Run & 5K, and compete for prizes & awards. The success of this event is made possible with the help of our dedicated volunteers, who handle a multitude of tasks ranging from parking assistance, providing refreshments, and cheering on participants throughout the course.
Because this event is focused on raising the awareness of violence that affects people of all ages, its important for us to be family-friendly and accessible to individuals of all ages. Participants are encouraged to take the walk/run at their own pace. A Kids Zone is open to children during the duration of the event.
WHAT DO THE RAISED FUNDS SUPPORT?
All funds raised through Victory Over Violence support services that empower survivors of sexual assault, child sexual abuse, and other violent crimes. These services include:
_Counseling For Children & Adults_
While the past cannot be erased, survivors can still heal from the trauma theyve endured. For both children & adult survivors or loved ones of survivors, professional counseling provides a way forward. The Womens Center provides both individual and group counseling conducted by masters level therapists and assigns case managers to help victims and their loved ones find the proper resources across many different categories.
_24-Hour Crisis Hotline_
The funds raised through events like Victory Over Violence support The Womens Centers round-the-clock crisis hotline, which connects victims of assault with knowledgeable, empathetic advocates. Whether the incident occurred minutes ago or years ago, the caring staff on the other end of the hotline are always available to help.
_Hospital and Court Accompaniment_
For many victims of sexual violence, a barrier to treatment is not wanting to go through it alone. To aid in these situations, The Womens Center has a hospital accompaniment program that provides assault victims with an advocate by their side. They also offer Criminal Justice Accompaniment, which works to prevent survivors from feeling unheard, scared, or challenged as they progress through court proceedings.
_Play It Safe!_
Play It Safe! uses age-appropriate materials to teach children pre-K through high school how to recognize, respond to and report sexual & physical abuse. Since 1983, more than 2 million children in North Texas have learned about personal safety from The Womens Centers Play It Safe! program.
_Professional Training_
When survivors interact with large systems, they need to feel confident that the professionals involved have the tools to help. The Womens Center provides extensive trauma-informed training in victimization issues, including the dynamics of sexual abuse and assault, to help teach school counselors, local law enforcement, criminal justice and medical personnel, case managers and other mental health providers how to best help victims.
_Adult Education_
Sexual assault and sexual abuse affect the entire community. The Womens Center is committed to raising individual and community awareness about these issues to better promote safety. Topics offered include Dynamics of Sexual Assault, Dynamics of Child Sexual Abuse, How to Talk to Children about Touch, Sexting & Cyberbullying, Healthy Relationships, and Sexual Harassment in the Workplace.
