With various participation brackets available, competitors can choose to aim for 3 hours, 6 hours, or even the ultimate 12-hour challenge, covering up to 36 miles in total. For those who prefer teamwork, the team bracket allows pairs to alternate laps, adding a fun and strategic element to the race. As you conquer each loop, you can take advantage of designated rest areas to recharge and refocus. Organiser's Description

THE 1-20-12 ENDURANCE CHALLENGE is a unique walk/run event open to individuals and teams of 2 ages 15 and older. Complete a 1-mile loop within an unpaved macadamia nut orchard on a dirt trail every 20 minutes for up to 12 hours, or until all competitors have been eliminated. Individuals must complete the 1 mile loop within 20 minutes and be within the chute area at the start of the next loop or be eliminated. Teams of 2 must alternate competitors each mile. If a team member cannot complete the 1-mile loop within 20 minute both team members are eliminated. If you complete the loop in less than 20 minutes you can rest, eat/drink, and change clothes within a designated area where you can erect a secured, weighted tent shelter. Competitor Support Team members are allowed in the tent area but not on the event course. Competitors can walk or run and walking sticks are permitted. The 1-mile loop has an elevation gain of 63 feet.

4 WAYS TO PARTICIPATE:

BRACKET 1- Sign up as an individual and attempt to run/walk for 3 hours, 1 mile every 20 minutes = total of 9 miles. If you cannot complete a loop in 20 minutes your will be eliminated.

BRACKET 2- Sign up as an individual and attempt to run/walk for 6 hours, 1 mile every 20 minutes = total of 18 miles. If you cannot complete a loop in 20 minutes your will be eliminated.

BRACKET 3A- Sign up as an individual and attempt to run/walk for 12 hours, 1 mile every 20 minutes = total of 36 miles. If you cannot complete a loop in 20 minutes your will be eliminated

OR BRACKET 3B- Sign up as an team of 2 and attempt to run/walk for 12 hours, 1 mile every 20 minutes = total of 36 miles. Each team member must alternate each loop, so each team member will attempt to complete 18 miles total. If a team member cannot complete a loop in 20 minutes, both team members will be eliminated.

The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge is sponsored by Vivawell, Inc. an 501c3 Hawaii island-based health promotion nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing chronic health conditions with diet, exercise, stress reduction, social support and health-supporting environments. The event is co-sponsored by Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Orchards. Event proceeds and donations benefit Vivawell's community programs serving the East Hawaii island Districts of Hilo, Puna and Ka'u.

Participants receive a t-shirt and a shoe bar medal.

If one member of a team does not complete the 1 mile loop in 20 minutes, both team members are eliminated. If you finish early you can rest, eat, drink, use the port-o-pottie, and change clothes in a designated area before the start of the next loop. The endurance challenge continues until all competitors have been eliminated or for up to 12 hours for a total of 36 miles. Participants receive a t-shirt and a shoe bar medal.
