Organiser's Description

The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge is a unique walk/run event open to individuals and teams of 2 ages 15 and older. Complete a 1-mile loop within an unpaved macadamia nut orchard on a dirt trail every 20 minutes for up to 12 hours, or until all competitors have been eliminated. Individuals must complete the 1 mile loop within 20 minutes and be within the chute area at the start of the next loop or be eliminated. Teams of 2 must alternate competitors each mile. If a team member cannot complete the 1-mile loop within 20 minute both team members are eliminated. If you complete the loop in less than 20 minutes you can rest, eat/drink, and change clothes within a designated area where you can erect a secured, weighted tent shelter. Competitor Support Team members are allowed in the tent area but not on the event course. Competitors can walk or run and walking sticks are permitted. The 1-mile loop ranged from 820 feet elevation to 950 feet elevation.

The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge is sponsored by Vivawell, Inc. an 501c3 Hawaii island-based health promotion nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing chronic health conditions with diet, exercise, stress reduction, social support and health-supporting environments. The event is co-sponsored by Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Orchards. Event proceeds and donations benefit Vivawell's community programs serving the East Hawaii island Districts of Hilo, Puna and Ka'u.

    Individuals or teams of two complete a 1 mile loop every 20 minutes for up to 12 hours or until all competitors have been eliminated. Individuals must complete each loop within 20 minutes. Teams of two must alternate competitors completing the 1 mile loop in 20 minutes. If you finish early you can rest, eat, drink, and change clothes is a designated area before the start of the next loop. If one member of a team does not complete the 1-mile loop in 20 minutes both team members are eliminated. The endurance challenge continues until all competitors have been eliminated or for up to 12 hours. Completing all 12 hours = 36 miles.
