What started as a casual conversation over a few pints has turned into an internationally acclaimed race where runners compete against horses over mountainous terrain. The course was adjusted in 1982 to level the playing field, leading to nail-biting finishes year after year. It wasn't until 25 years later that a man finally beat a horse, adding to the excitement and challenge of the event. Organiser's Description
The Man v Horse Marathon came to be in June 1980 following a chat over a pint (or three) about the relative merits of men and horses running over mountainous terrain. The course was changed in 1982 to provide a more even match between the man and the horse, resulting year on year in very close finishes, but it took 25 years before a man finally beat a horse! Now internationally acclaimed event.
