Triathlons

Triathlons combine swimming, cycling and running into one of the most popular all-round physical challenges. There are a huge variety of types of triathlons to choose from in terms of distances, cycle and run terrain options, and whether the swim is in a pool, in open water (eg lake) or even the sea.

Triathlon distances:
Super Sprint Triathlons: 400m swim; 10km bike; 2.5km run.
Sprint Triathlons: 750m swim; 20km bike; 5km run.
Olympic Triathlons (aka Standard Triathlons): 1500m swim; 40km bike; 10km run.
Half Ironman Triathlons: 1.9km swim; 90km bike; 21.1km run. (This distance is also known as a “70.3” which refers to the total race distance in miles.)
Ironman™ Triathlons: 3.86km (2.4 mile) swim; 180.25km (112 mile) bike; 42.2km (26.2 mile) run. As Ironman™ is a trademark, these are also known as ‘Iron distance’ events.

Find a Race lists more than 450 triathlons every year. Triathlon FAQs

If you're thinking about trying your first event, take a look at some of the most commonly asked questions about Triathlons.

How far is a beginner triathlon?

Most beginners start with either a super-sprint or sprint triathlon. A super-sprint will typically include a 400m swim, 10km bike ride and 2.5km run. Move up to a sprint, and that usually becomes a 750m swim, 20km on the bike and a 5km run. Organisers do vary these distances, though, so check all three sections before entering a super-sprint triathlon.

When does the UK triathlon season start and finish?

The main UK triathlon season runs from April until early October, with the widest choice of races usually appearing during summer and September. Most open-water races take place in the milder months, but pool-based events often fall earlier in spring or later in autumn. An organiser might have to change timings when the water is too cold, or the weather turns severe. For that reason, it’s important to keep checking the official race instructions as the event approaches.

What’s a good beginner triathlon?

Entry to a local sprint triathlon will often cost somewhere between £40 and £70, although there are races on either side of that range. Recent UK events have offered introductory places for roughly £20. At the other end, major festivals and long-distance races can cost well over £100, with certain iron-distance entries passing £300. Remember that this only covers your race place. Kit, transport, food and possibly a hotel can make a distant event much more expensive than a nearby sprint triathlon.

Which UK triathlons have a flat bike leg?

Dorney Lake, York Triathlon, The Bedford Triathlon and Fleetwood Triathlon are among the flatter triathlon course choices available in the UK. Dorney Lake has published a figure of around 20m of bike elevation, while certain introductory events have reported less than 50m of climbing. Even a flat route can feel tough on a windy day, especially at an exposed venue. Before choosing an Olympic-distance triathlon, look at the elevation profile but also check for tight corners and rough sections of road.

Is 30 too old to start triathlon?

No, 30 is certainly not too old to begin triathlon! Lots of people take up the sport in their thirties, forties and much later, often without a background in all three disciplines. Your current fitness, swimming ability, and available training time are more useful to consider than your age. A super-sprint triathlon gives you a realistic first target without asking you to prepare immediately for a long day of racing.

What is the hardest part of a triathlon?

The swim is the hardest section for most first- timers, especially when it takes place in open water. You can’t see as clearly as you can in a pool, there may be swimmers close beside you, and there’s no wall to pause at. Going for an event with a pool swim sidesteps these issues, so bear that in mind when choosing your event. The run can also be hard work even for seasoned runners, as by then, the bike leg has taken something out of your legs, and your normal running pace may no longer feel as comfortable.

Is a duathlon harder than a triathlon?

Neither format is always harder; your own sporting background and fitness is the key to which you find harder or easier. Aduathlon removes the swim, which is a big advantage for anyone less confident in the water. In exchange, it gives you two runs. The first one also means you reach the bike already fatigued, then have to find enough energy to run again afterwards. Runners may prefer that challenge, while strong swimmers might be happier in a triathlon.

What time do triathlon waves start on race morning?

Triathlon waves typically begin between 6.30 am and 9 am, though your start time may be later. The advertised time often belongs to the first group entering the water, not every competitor, and the transition area may close well before racing gets underway. Your final instructions should include a personal wave, briefing time, and a deadline for racking your bike. Use those details to plan the morning rather than relying on the main time shown on the event listing.

What is the toughest triathlon in the UK?

Celtman Xtreme, The Brutal and Helvellyn Triathlon are regularly included in discussions about Britain’s toughest triathlons. All three combine serious climbing with difficult ground and weather that can change quickly. THE ROC England is another strong candidate, with more than 3,000ft of elevation gain on its course. These races sit a long way above a standard beginner event, so most athletes work towards them throughmiddle-distance oriron-distance events first.
