Walking event FAQs

What counts as a walking event, and can I walk an ordinary race?

Walking events include dedicated hikes and challenges, as well as some running events that explicitly welcome walkers. The Atlantic Coast Ultra, for example, allows entrants to complete its 40-mile route by walking, and The 7 Deadly Sins 7in7 is open to both walkers and runners. Don’t assume you can walk any race, though, as many have time cut-offs, and entry rules vary. If an event isn’t explicitly listed as a walking event, make sure you check the rules before entering.

How far are UK walking events, from the shortest to the longest?

Walking event distances vary. The calendar includes some walks that are fairly short to ultra-distance and multi-day challenges. The Flora Maverick Jurassic Coast Hike offers a 22km half marathon option as well as a 43km route, and the Atlantic Coast Ultra covers 40 miles in a day. If you want to go further still, there are events spread across several consecutive days.

Do walking events run all year, or only in summer?

Walking events run throughout the year, although the type of event on offer changes with the seasons. The current calendar has organised walks and walker-friendly events through autumn and winter, followed by more hiking and trail challenges in spring and summer 2027. You don’t have to wait for warm weather, but a January trail event is naturally quite a different experience from a summer hike.

How much does it cost to enter a walking event?

Walking event entry can range from a few pounds for a short local event to well over £100 for a longer or multi-day challenge. Current listings start at £6 for the Bulwell Santa Run. At the other end of the spectrum, the three-day Jurassic Coast Challenge reaches £210. In between, the Atlantic Coast Ultra costs £90 and the Jurassic Coast Hike is £25, although the latter is a charity entry with a separate fundraising commitment. The big variation reflects how different these events are.

Is there a time limit, or will I be swept up at the back?

Some walking events do have cut-offs, so you shouldn’t assume you can stay on the course indefinitely. The Atlantic Coast Ultra starts at around 08:30 and has a 21:30 cut-off, giving walkers most of the day to complete the 40 miles. The 7 Deadly Sins 7in7 uses a seven-hour limit each day. Each event is slightly different, which is why you should check the cut-off before entering.

How hilly are UK walking events, and how much climbing is involved?

UK walking events range from relatively straightforward routes to tougher hill challenges. The 50km route at the Peak District Challenge has been described by a verified finisher as involving around 1,100m of ascent, while the Atlantic Coast Ultra follows a rugged section of the South West Coast Path with steep climbs and descents. Just because an event is shorter, doesn’t necessarily mean it will be easier. That’s why checking the elevation profile of an event is just as important.

After a first organised walk, what should I take on next?

You don’t have to jump straight into a really tough event after your first organised walk. Instead, you could take on something that’s a little bit longer or slightly more challenging, which allows you to build up to those bigger events more slowly. A dedicated half marathon-distance hike gives you somewhere to start, and from there you might choose a longer trail challenge or an event spread across several days. If what you enjoyed most was being out on trails rather than the walking-only format, you could also explore trail events for more options.
