Organiser's Description

The Exmoor running and walking festival is a celebration of travelling on foot within the stunning Exmoor National Park. Whether you are a runner or a walker we’ve got something to challenge you as we base ourselves in the remotest part of the National Park.

How did the festival come about?

We’ve been organising the historic Exmoor Perambulation for 5 years now and our very own concept, Man vs Moor for 3 years. In past years they’ve been on different weekends over the summer but in 2021 we decided to bring them together on the same weekend. Not only is it the summer solstice so the longest days but it also opens up the opportunity to get more people together in one location to celebrate Exmoor and it’s stunning terrain.

Why bring them together?

We wanted to showcase the wild running and walking that Exmoor has to offer to a wider range of people. By delivering these two events on the same weekend we get to bring more of you together at the same venue at the same time, get more people staying at the event hub for the weekend creating a really nice vibe and social occasion and hopefully see a few of you rise to the challenge of doing both events in some capacity over the weekend.

The 2023 Festival Includes:

Friday 23rd June 2023

– Sunset Swim at Pinkery Pond

– Guest Speaker – TBC

Saturday 24th June 2023

– The Exmoor Perambulation – Long Distance Walk (30 miles or 15 miles)

– The Exmoor Perambulation – Ultra Trail Marathon (30 miles)

– The Exmoor Perambulation – Wild Trail Run (15 Miles)

– Family Walk (3 Miles)

– Guest Speaker – TBC

– BBQ

Sunday 25th June 2023

– Man vs Moor Light – 5 km

– Man vs Moor Classic – 10 km

– Man vs Moor Ultimate – 10 Miler

– Man vs Moor Kids – 1.5 km

Both Friday and Saturday nights will see the opportunity to have social gatherings to share stories of running and walking and be inspired by our guest speakers. We are also working on screening some really interesting and inspiring films/documentaries about the activities we all love.

FAQs

  • Can I borrow equipment?

No. We ask that all entrants are fully equipped and understand how to use their equipment prior to taking part in the event.

  • Can I wear my shorts?

Of course. We advise that long trousers are worn to prevent rashes from plants such as Gorse and Heather but this is up to you to decide.

  • Is it possible to get lost?

Yes. This event is not way-marked. Entrants should be proficient with the use of a map and compass and be able to follow a route description. Contact us if you’re at all concerned about the navigation skills required. A full route description and GPX files for GPS devices can be found on the downloads page. We recommend you use the Ordnance Survey Explorer 1:25000 map sheet: Exmoor OL9

  • What if I run out of time?

The event is 30 miles but spilt into two halves. There are 8 checkpoints in total. 5 on the first half, one at half way and 3 on the second half. Entrants not reaching half way (check point 5b) by 13:00 will be stopped and transported back to the event base. At all other checkpoints the event organisers reserve the right to determine whether there is time for you to continue. Please note, should the event organisers decide you are unable to continue then your tally will be removed. If you choose to continue then you are doing so at your own risk and will no longer be under the supervision and insurance of the event.

  • Am I allowed to run the route?

Yes, we are also running an ultra marathon alongside the traditional walking event. If you wish to run the route please book the runners ticket as your start time is set later at 09:00 with registration at 08:15 onwards.

  • Can I fill up my water at every checkpoint?

There will be water available at most checkpoints but we ask that you come with the aim of being self-sufficient for the day. Some of the check points are remote and it’s difficult to get water there. All participants must carry a water bottle. We will no longer be supplying throw away cups at checkpoints. If each entrant used a cup at each checkpoint we would be throwing over 1000 plastic cups into landfill in one day!

  • Is there accommodation available?

Yes, we have a limited number of beds in the bunkhouse and also camping on site.

  • Will there be any event photographs?

Paul Rubery from Image 5 Photography will be on site so smile if you spot him. All of his images will be available online shortly after the event. High resolution versions and prints are available to buy after the event. 100% of the sales profits will go to the Exmoor Search and Rescue Team to help them keep their vital equipment and resources stocked.

  • What are the event timings?

    30 mile walk register and go: 06:00 – 07:00 15 mile walk register and go: 07:00 – 08:00 30 & 15 mile run registration: 08:15 – 08:45 30 & 15 mile run start: 09:00 Second half cut off time (CP5b) is 13:00 for walkers and runners

  • How many checkpoints are there?

There are 8 checkpoints in total. 5 on the first half and 3 on the second half. The first checkpoint is a marshal station only and stopping is not required. The remaining 7 checkpoints do require you to stop and have your time recorded.

  • Can I bring my dog with me?

Dogs are allowed but at owners own risk. Due to some of the route covering both private land and commonly grazed land it is imperative that your dog is kept on a lead through these sections. Please take weather conditions into account if bringing your dog, at this time of year it can be incredibly hot and if we do not believe that your dog is able to continue then you will not be able to continue either. We cannot provide a dog sitting service. This goes for both walkers and runners. Please also read the updated countryside code that is linked to the pre-event emails. There are a number of changes around dogs and their control.

refreshments

Before and after your walk or run refreshments will be available from the ‘Beet Box’, a converted horse box serving a range of plant based food and beverage options. This is not included in your entry fee.

HALF WAY – MILES TEA STOP
On arrival at our halfway tea stop you will be greeted with a smile and a nice brew courtesy of our friends at Miles Tea and lovely treats from Beetbox. In order to continue on to the full route you must be leaving this stop and passing through checkpoint 5b by 13:00. If you’re finishing here transport is available back to the event base.
