Aquabike Events and Races are fairly new on the scene, and they are the logical conclusion to the multisport events calendar.

Aquabike races are perfect for those who fancy a triathlon but can't or don't want to do the running part. Aquabike events comprise a swim (usually in open water) followed by a ride, but they don't have set "classic distances" like triathlons, so check what you are letting yourself in for before you sign up! What is an aquabike race?

An aquabike is a multisport race built around swimming and cycling, without a timed running leg. You’ll complete the swim, transition onto the bike and finish after the cycling section; under British Triathlon rules, there may be a very short run from transition to the finish line. Aquabike races are often offered alongside a triathlon at the same event and can cover anything from shorter sprint formats to much longer endurance distances.

Why would you enter an aquabike instead of a triathlon?

Aquabike gives you the swim-and-bike experience of a triathlon without having to take on the running leg. It’s a good fit if swimming and cycling are the parts you enjoy the most, or if you’re really not keen on running. Lots of aquabike events take place alongside triathlons, so you get a similar race-day experience and atmosphere.

Where in the UK can you do an aquabike?

Aquabikes take place in several parts of the UK, although the calendar is a lot smaller than it is for triathlon events. Current races include events in places such as Wilmslow in Cheshire and Dorney Lake near Windsor, plus others listed across England and Wales. Since there aren’t a huge number of events, it’s worth searching by date as well as location if you can’t see anything close to home.

When does the UK aquabike season start and finish?

Most UK aquabike racing takes place between spring and early autumn. The calendar is especially busy during late summer and September, with some races continuing into October, and the following year’s events beginning to appear from spring onwards. The calendar is updated regularly, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for new additions.

How much does it cost to enter an aquabike?

The price of an aquabike event depends on the individual event and the distance you choose. For example, the sprint aquabike at the 2026 Wilmslow Autumn Triathlon is £59, while the September Dorney Lake event is £72.08 for its sprint aquabike and £94.34 for the standard distance. Longer endurance events can cost considerably more.

Is the bike leg of a UK aquabike hilly?

At some events the bike leg may be hilly; at others, like Dotney Lake, it could be completely flat. It depends on the event. If you’re looking for an event that doesn’t include many (or any) hills, check the event description and elevation before you book.
