An obstacle course race, or OCR, combines running with various physical challenges placed throughout the course. These challenges can vary massively - one event might use inflatable obstacles, and another might have you scaling walls or wading through mud. Obstacle racing doesn’t necessarily mean signing up for an all-day endurance event, as distances can vary a lot too. If you’d prefer the running without the obstacles, take a look at our trail runs instead.

Spartan races do take place across the UK, with several distances usually offered across the weekend. The current formats range from the 5k Sprint to the 10k Super, 21k Beast and 50k Ultra, so ‘a Spartan’ can mean different things depending on which one you enter. Spartan events aren’t the only option either; the UK obstacle calendar also includes inflatable races and other independent OCR events.

It’s best to start by finding a shorter race with obstacles you’re comfortable attempting, rather than choosing based on the brand name. Some inflatable events are great for beginners because they let participants miss an obstacle after checking with the marshal, which reduces the pressure if you’re new to OCR. A 5k is probably a good shout distance-wise - you can explore ordinary 5k races here if you’re unsure you want obstacles at your first event.

What is harder, Hyrox or a Spartan race?
Hyrox and Spartan events test you in different ways, so it’s not possible to say which is ‘harder’ overall. Hyrox follows a fixed format of eight 1km runs, each followed by a workout station. Spartan races take place on obstacle courses and can range from a 5k Sprint to much longer events, with the terrain changing from venue to venue. If you enjoy running over varied outdoor ground, you may find OCR more appealing; HYROX gives you a much more standardised format.

Obstacle course entry prices vary depending on the event and ticket type. Current options on the UK calendar range from £22.50 at the lower end to £107.50, although it’s worth noting that the top end includes higher-priced entry packages, rather than representing a standard OCR fee. Loads of shorter events sit at the lower end of that range, but you can only really get a sense of the value by comparing what the entry package includes.
