What distances make up a sprint triathlon?
What distances make up a sprint triathlon?
A standard sprint triathlon combines a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run. Those figures can vary slightly when a venue needs to adapt its course. Pool-based races may also change the swim length to suit the lanes available. It’s important to check the measurements before entering rather than relying on the word “sprint” alone. If 750m of swimming feels too challenging a first step, a super-sprint triathlon usually reduces it to around 400m.
What is a decent time for a sprint triathlon?
What is a decent time for a sprint triathlon?
Finishing in under two hours is a really solid time for a first sprint-triathlon, and a result below 1 hour 30 minutes would be strong for many more experienced participants. Your final time includes both transitions, which means the clock keeps running while you change equipment and move between disciplines. Hills can slow the bike leg considerably, while an open-water swim may take longer than the same distance in a pool. Even the route from the water to transition can add several minutes. This means it’s much more useful to compare your result with people from the same race than with one universal benchmark.
Is two months enough time to train for a sprint triathlon?
Is two months enough time to train for a sprint triathlon?
Eight weeks can be enough if you’re already comfortable with each sprint triathlon discipline on its own. You’ll then need to practise joining them together, especially the change from cycling to running when your legs feel heavy. If swimming is completely new to you, two months may not be quite long enough to feel comfortable. The same applies if you haven’t exercised consistently for some time. Choosing a later race or a shorter format is more sensible than trying to squeeze too much preparation into a fixed date.
What should I step up to after my first sprint triathlon?
What should I step up to after my first sprint triathlon?
An Olympic-distance triathlon is the usual next step once sprint racing feels comfortable. It normally doubles the swim to 1.5km and the bike ride to 40km, then finishes with a 10km run. You don’t have to move up immediately, though. Another sprint on a hillier course could present a fresh challenge, as could moving from a pool to open water. Build towards middle distance only when you want the extra training and race-day commitment, not because completing one sprint means you’re expected to progress.
