Organiser's Description

The Midwinter Mortimer Trail, the sister event to the Midsummer Mortimer Trail consists of two distances of mixed trail/forest/road runs along the beautiful Mortimer Trail, between the historic market towns of Ludlow, Shropshire and Kington, Herefordshire.

Starting at Ludlow Castle, the MMT(W) Ultra is a mere 30ish mile multi terrain run. The route takes you through the Marches of England, with extensive forests, limestone tops and gentle pastures in an area dominated in mediaeval times by the Mortimer family, one of the most powerful Norman earldoms.

The MMT(W) Croft15 follows the last half of the Ultra route, starting at the lovely Riverside Inn, Aymestrey.

Course Details

The route takes you through the Marches of England, with extensive forests, limestone tops and gentle pastures in an area dominated in mediaeval times by the Mortimer family, one of the most powerful Norman earldoms. Expect hills, mud and possibly snow!

What's Included

Starting at Ludlow Castle or the Riverside Inn at Aymestrey, this self-nav, no-frills event is ideal for newcomers to ultra running. Two weeks before the race, athletes will receive a comprehensive Athlete Guide, packed with helpful advice and information to prepare you for race day. Aid stations will be full of Christmas goodies, so whether you are looking to burn off the Christmas excess or enjoy a more leisurely pace, the Midwinter Mortimer Trail is the post-Christmas event not to be missed.

How to Get There

By Road:
Ludlow is situated on the A49 trunk road which runs from Warrington, through Shrewsbury and Hereford to Ross-on-Wye. From Birmingham, head west on the A456 through Kidderminster. From the M5 leave at junction 3 and continue on the A456 through Kidderminster.
The Riverside Inn is situated on the A4110 in North Herefordshire, next to River Lugg in the small village of Aymestrey.
A minibus will be transporting athletes from Kington to Ludlow, and is available at an extra cost of £14

Parking

Parking in Kington is available at the town's main Pay and Display car park, west of the Market Hall on Mill Street

Location

Registration for the Ultra takes place at Ludlow Castle, SY8 1AY. Registration for the Croft 15, takes place at the Riverside Inn at Aymestry, HR6 9ST
Race HQ for both distances will be located at the finish at the Burton Hotel, in the delightful market town of Kington, Herefordshire, HR5 3BQ.
Race HQ will be established once both distances have been set off.

FAQs

  • What time does it start?

    The Ultra starts at 0800 from Ludlow Castle. The Croft15 starts at 0900 from the Riverside Inn at Aymestrey. Both events finish at the Burton Hotel in Kington.

  • What distances are involved?

    There are two distances to choose from: MMT(W) Ultra: approximately 30 miles MMT(W) Croft15: approximately 17 miles

  • What are the cut offs?

    MMT(W) Ultra: although there is no official cut off, it is estimated that most athletes should arrive at the Riverside Inn checkpoint no later than 1400 (5 hours after starting) and be finished by 2000 (12 hours after starting). MMT(W) Croft15: again, there is no cut off, but it is estimated that most athletes should arrive at the finish in Kington no later than 1500 (6 hours after starting).

  • Is there a kit list?

    Below is a list of the required and optional kit for the race. You MUST have all the required items on the list and MUST be as described. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS. The organisers’ decision is final. We will be carrying out kit spot checks at the start/finish and the checkpoints any runner found to not be carrying all the compulsory kit will be disqualified, this is for your own safety and also ensures that all entrants are carrying the same kit whether a racing snake or back marker. Compulsory Kit List: Rucksack/Race Vest - suitable for carrying the items on the compulsory kit list (!) Fully charged Mobile phone - with emergency numbers saved Means of hydration - ability to carry an absolute minimum of 500ml of fluid Enough food for between checkpoints (no shops on route!) Waterproof jacket and trousers Hat Gloves Fleece (or similar long sleeved warm upper body layer) Basic first aid kit (plasters, microtape, vaseline, scissors minimum) Fully charged head torch/torch Whistle Map (covering full route) - Ideally OS map but printed sections off the website will suffice Personal medication Optional Kit List: Cup/Mug/Bottle - no cups will be provided at checkpoints Paracetamol / ibupofren (self-issue only)

Ludlow to Kington Ultra

on the day recommendations

We recommend parking your car early in the morning in Kington and making your way back to Ludlow or Aymestrey for the start of your race. There is both paid and free parking at Kington in the High Street Car Park, Crabtree Rd, Kington, Herefordshire HR5 3UE. Minibus transport which can be booked for £15 per person when you sign up for the race will also take athletes from this car park to Ludlow or Aymestrey for registration and the start of your respective race. There is paid 'all day' parking in Ludlow in the Linney SY8 1EE, but no parking at the Riverside Inn, Aymestrey. Further details on car parking and transport will be shown in the Athlete’s Guide that is posted to each athlete two weeks prior to race day.

  • There is no organised transport from Kington back to Aymestrey or Ludlow after the race

For those athletes doing the MMT(W) Ultra distance there will be the opportunity to buy coffee and cake for £5 at Chapter66 café and use the toilet facilities as you register and get ready for the start.

For both the MMT(W) Croft 15 athletes starting at, and the MMT(W) Ultra athletes checking in at, the Riverside Inn checkpoint there will be plenty of water and snacks as well as toilet facilities.
