Course Details

Long Route
The South Downs way has long been a storied ride for the off road trip.
Starting from Plumpton Racecourse we hit the first (tarmac) climb after 4km and then hit the South Downs Way and follow it over three gravel climbs to the coast in Eastbourne.
The coast is the half way point of the ride and the way back takes in a different three gravel climbs including Bopeep Bostal before a welcome descent back to Plumpton.
Percentage of Route Off Road: 65%
Distance:
111km

Medium Route
The medium route cuts out 35km at the bottom of the route from Alfriston to Eastbourne.
There are two climbs (one road, one gravel) on the way out and three on the way back. A challenging 76km option but very rewarding with most of the route miles away from the crowds and some stunning views.

Bike Selection & Packing List

Bike Choice: The route is about 65% on gravel and 35% on back roads. Most of the off road sections on the South Downs Way are chalky or grass. We recommend a gravel bike though a mountain bike will be fine. E-bikes are allowed on all of our rides.

Tyre Choice: We will send an update on conditions closer to the ride. Early summer should see ideal conditions so a slightly wider (40 to 50mm) all rounder gravel tyre will be ideal.

Packing List: Bring equipment to be self sufficient on the route as we go into remote areas without phone signal (inner tubes, sealant, multi-tool, pump or CO2 etc). We recommend a bell to warn walkers / runners of your presence.

Clothing: Early July on the south coast should see nice temperatures but keep an eye on the forecast. With plenty of long descents and some exposed sections on the tops, a lightweight wind jacket will be useful. Helmets are mandatory, you will not be able to ride without one.
