Steaming Down The Valley

Sat 6th June 2026

A grassy riverside landscape under a partly cloudy sky, with the river flowing on the left and a line of trees in the background. The scene is peaceful and natural. A black steam train numbered 75069 releases steam at a vintage brick train station, with people onboard and a station building labeled "LADIES" adorned with hanging flowers. Three kayakers paddle down a calm, tree-lined river on a cloudy day, surrounded by lush green foliage on both sides. A vintage steam locomotive with green and gold accents pulls a line of passenger cars along a railway track, emitting thick white steam under a clear blue sky in a rural landscape.

Organiser's Description

A unique multi-sport challenge in the Severn Valley – race a steam train along one of the UK’s most scenic river corridors 🚂

Steaming Down the Valley is a scenic trail running and paddle sports event set in the heart of the Severn Valley, with race HQ at the Severn Valley Country Park, following woodland paths and riverside trails or the majestic River Severn alongside the iconic Severn Valley Railway.

The trail race takes place from the Severn Valley Country Park's historic Country Park Halt station, starting by the sound of the steam train, and running south to Arley, where a finish line at the iconic Arley station greets runners on the 5k race. 10k runners will return back up the river upstream, racing against the returning train.

This is a fully off-road race on a mix of dirt paths, woodland trail, gravel and grass, with natural undulations and uneven footing throughout. Conditions underfoot may include muddy or soft sections, particularly along the riverside, but this is not an extreme mud event. Trail shoes are recommended.

If you're less of a landlubber, there's the paddle sports race. The race starts from the Miner's bridge in the Severn Valley country park. Choose you craft canoe, kayak or stand up paddle board and set off at the sound of the steam train. Paddle down the beautiful section of river trying to beat the train to the footbridge in the riverside village of Arley.

This is a section of sheltered water with some little riffles. You need to have had some experince paddling your craft. Buoyancy aids are mandatory and helmets must be worn in closed cockpit and stand up craft. No rescue cover provided.

Choose from a 5K or 10K trail run, or take on the river with our paddlesports race. Expect grassy riverside paths, woodland trails, and the unforgettable experience of running alongside the Severn Valley Railway.

Amazing event. Considering it was the first time it had been done it was very well organised. Registration was quick and easy, I allowed an hour for this but was done within 5 minutes. Marshalls were all supportive and prior to the race on hand to point you in the right direction to the start line. Only downside the wooded area where there was 2-way traffic on a single track was a little challenging to navigate due to the volume of people, some people naturally wanting PB so pushing their way through and unfortunately the weather conditions had made it very slippery underfoot. But I thoroughly enjoyed it, definitely signing up to the next.
