Organiser's Description

A demanding 115km endurance triathlon rich in challenges & crammed full of inspiring terrain from start to finish, THE ROC showcases the best triathlon arena Wales and its breath-taking landscape has to offer.

Commencing on the golden sands of Abersoch beach the race starts with a 1.5km sea swim in the villages idyllic bay before heading off on a 50km fast and progressively undulating bike route into the Snowdon Massif.

The race then heads on foot via the toughest route up Wales’ highest mountain along The Watkin Path, 6km of 3,085ft formidable ascent to the summit where you can absorb those exceptional panoramic views before heading 6km back down, 50km return cycle, culminating with a 1km run along Abersoch beach before crossing the finish line.

Taking place on Friday 15th – Saturday 16th September 2023, this epic challenge boasts euphoric support, motivating camaraderie and inspiring ambitious athletes taking on THE ROC WALES; Abersoch to Snowdon’s summit and back.
In addition we’ve got events like the MOVE Against Cancer Torchlight Beach Run, the Johnny Rob Run SUP Run, live music, BBQ, the official ‘After Party’ and much more.

Course Details

From Abersoch Beach to Snowdon's summit and back with 115km of epic terrain and a total ascent of 5,825ft.
1.5km swim | 50km bike | 6km up Snowdon | 6km down Snowdon | 50km bike return to Abersoch | 1km beach run

THE ROC WALES COURSE DETAILS.
SWIM COURSE (1,500 meters)
Starts on the beach running into the sea for a box course heading to Tudwal’s West Island before rounding a buoy to swim parallel to the beach to SCYC, round 2 more buoys, return parallel to the beach and round the final buoy before heading in to the beach and the middle slip ramp. 50 meters run up the beach to transition.

BIKE COURSE (50 KM – Out)
A superb exhilarating course with plenty of long fast sections and some exciting technical sections thrown in too.

SNOWDON RUN (6 Kilometers each way)
Labelled the most stunning route up Snowdon, The Watkin Path is steeped in history and offers the most inspiring trail route up this most famous mountain. It’s progressive in ascent & culminates in a technical steep section near the summit before the fast & furious run back down. N.B. You will need to pass the 4km Check Point up Snowdon before 12 Noon to be able to progress to the summit.

BIKE COURSE (50 KM – Back)
Some great long stretches of open picturesque roads with plenty of technical sections thrown in too. It’s a memorable route back to the finish.

FINAL BEACH RUN (1KM)
The finish straight and really a glory lap on Abersoch beach taking you to the first Groyne and back to see you home in style over the finish line.

How to Get There

To get to Abersoch you will need to take the A55 North Wales Expressway. Stay on the A55 until J10 for Bangor and take the A4087 towards Caernarfon. Join the new Caernarfon and Bontnewydd bypass and follow signs to Abersoch. You’ll drive through the Pwllheli and Llanbedrog and then arrive in Abersoch. The race starts at Abersoch Main Beach.

Parking

Parking is available at the beach car park down Lon Golff (Golf Road), which is located close to the transition area and start of the race. There are alternative car parks in Abersoch, for example by the school, along the one-way system. Both car parks are pay and display.

THE START The start is on Abersoch beach to the right of the middle slip ramp (bottom of Lon Golff / Golf Road).

Please arrive and be ready AT LEAST 45 minutes before the start time.

RACE PACKS You will receive a Pre-Race Pack 4 weeks in advance of the race and then the main Race Pack 1 week before the race. These are only sent out via email containing all the information & instructions you need in preparation for race day. It includes details of where to register and to collect your race bibs, timing tags, transitions etc.
Registration is on the evening prior to the race. If for some reason you won’t be able to arrive until race morning then you will need to book in an emergency registration slot.

WATER TEMPERATURE Wearing of wetsuits for the swim discipline will be mandatory. British Triathlon Federation rules will be abide by for shortened swim course or removal of the swim altogether. If removed altogether a 3km trail run will be added to the start of the race.

TRANSITIONS T1 & T4 is positioned a short distance from the beach, race control and the car park. T2 & T3 is positioned at Hafod y Llan at the foot of Snowdon. During registration you will be given a drawstring bag which you must put your Mountain Kit in for the Snowdon leg of the race. This should be in a Trail Running bag or lightweight rucksack and include the following items:
Full waterproof body cover of hooded jacket and trousers (we recommend with taped seams)
Hat/buff
gloves
Water bottle / carrier
High Energy Snacks
Foil Blanket
High Factor Sun Cream
Whistle
Outside your Mountain Kit Bag (but in the drawstring bag):
Appropriate running/trail shoes
Change of clothes (optional)
Your drawstring bag will then be secured overnight and taken to T2 at Hafod y Llan where it will be ready for you once you have racked your bike & removed your helmet and shoes.
The drawstring bag will be inside the marquee right next to T2. This will allow you to prepare for the mountain undercover, but does not provide total privacy!
Once you have removed your items from your bag and are ready to set off, you hang your bag back onto your numbered race peg.
When returning you will collect your bag again to put your Mountain Kit Bag in and any other items you don’t want to take on the bike. These will then be brought back to the finish.

PRIZES There is £1,000 prize money for THE ROC WALES and £2,000 for THE ROC SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS with the prestigious ROC trophies to first man & first woman at each race. CLICK FOR FULL PRIZE BREAKDOWN.

MEDALS & SUSTENANCE Bespoke ROC race medals, water & items like banana’s & chocolate bars will be given to all ROC finishers. Additional water points at the half way point on the bike course and at T2/T3 along with additional cakes & banana’s. There is emergency water at the 4km and summit checkpoints on Snowdon.

TIMING All triathletes will be provided with an ankle tag timing chip, This will record your individual time complete with Snowdon Summit time & transition times for both Abersoch & Hafod y Llan transition areas.

DRINK & RECHARGE STATIONS Hafod Y Llan (T2) and Criccieth (Half way point of the return leg on the bike). Emergency water & gels only: 4km Snowdon Checkpoint and Summit.

race rules

UK Race triathlons are governed by the British Triathlon Federation. All entrants are required to abide by all applicable British Triathlon rules and regulations found in the BTF Rulebook.
Competitors must be 18 or over to enter and take part in The ROC
Wearing of wetsuits for the swim discipline will be mandatory. (Neoprene Hats and socks are allowed for the MAY race).
Swim distances are determined by the sea temperature using BTF rules. Should the sea temperature be below 11 degrees then a 3km trail run will replace the swim.
This is a no drafting event.
A cut off time will be in force at the Check Point 4km up Snowdon. Any competitor who does not reach this point by 12 NOON will be instructed not to head to the summit but to turn around and complete the course from there. Race officials will be advised and you will receive a different medal when you cross the finish line.
Unless you are an affiliated member of the British Triathlon Federation you must purchase a Day License Membership at registration. This provides you with third party liability insurance. It’s valid on the day of your competition and cannot be transferred. Please be prepared to pay £5 for your membership at registration. Please present your day or annual membership at registration.
Triathletes will not hold the race organiser responsible for any injury or loss
Registrants understand that the final decision for the commencement of the race to go ahead on the day is that of the race organisers “Sensation Group” only.
Event organisers are able to amend the course route at any time and without prior notification.
All registrants must agree to the Race Terms & Conditions when entering.
