Organiser's Description

The April 2020 event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but we're now delighted to be able to hold a Covid-secure ULTRA NORTH on Saturday 3 October 2020. Entries are now open.

ULTRA NORTH is the new ultra-marathon for the North East. Run, jog or walk along the charming route and exploring some of the North East industrial heritage, glorious trails and wonderful woodland. An is an ideal event for both those looking to take on their first Ultra, and experienced ultra runners, looking for a new challenge.

ULTRA NORTH 55 provides a 55km distance ultra marathon starting on Newcastle's Quayside, close to Newcastle Central Station, and with plenty of accommodation options. NORTH 27.5 starts at the halfway point of the 55km event and transport from the city centre to the start line can be purchased along with your entry.

The course will be fully marked and both distances finish close to Newcastle city centre, where participants can celebrate their achievements.

Course Details

ULTRA 55
Starting on Scotswood Road, the 55k route will take you along Hadrians Way following the River Tyne towards Wylam, then out to Chopwell Wood, Derwent Walk and Derwenthaugh Park before heading back on a scenic river route and finishing back in the centre of Newcastle.


ULTRA 27.5
Take on the first half of the ULTRA NORTH 55 route. The 27.5k route will follow Hadrians Way towards Wylam, then head back along the south side of the River Tyne back to Newcastle, finishing in the city centre on Scotswood Road.

Required Kit List

All participants must carry some basic provisions and equipment with them at all times, including:

  • A mobile phone with a fully charged battery on race day morning
  • Debit/Credit card to enable purchases from shops if required, and use on public transport
  • Small foil blanket or a warm layer of clothing.
  • Water bottle/foldable cup for water
  • Your own initial water supply and any specific fuel/food required.
  • Suitable footwear

Participants will be advised of the full mandatory equipment list well in advance of the event date.

Aid Stations

ULTRA NORTH 55: there are three checkpoints along the route, plus the finish.

NORTH 27.5: there is one checkpoint along the route, plus the finish.

Specific details of the checkpoints will be shared with all participants prior to the event.
