Who says Halloween is just for trick-or-treating? If you fancy celebrating with a race instead, we've found six events taking place on 31st October, with plenty of fancy dress, spooky surprises and Halloween fun along the way.

1 / Chase The Moon QE Olympic Park Halloween 5k & 10k

Get your costume ready for this Halloween edition of the Chase the Moon series, run after dark through Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Choose the 5k or 10k, join the field in fancy dress and set off under the moon at 7pm. A themed medal awaits at the finish.

2 / Halloween Trail Half

Halloween falls on race day for this trail half near Edinburgh, running through the woods and estate grounds of Dalmeny and Cammo Nature Reserve. The route covers wooded trails, riverside paths and farm tracks, with under 1,000ft of climbing. It's a good way to spend Halloween instead of a party.

3 / Halloween 5k Herons Reach, Blackpool

Keep your wits about you at this Blackpool 5k, because not all of the marshals are there to help you. Some, the organisers warn, have other intentions. Expect a few surprises around the course at Herons Reach. It's open to anyone aged 11 and over.

4 / Irchester Spooktacular

Run through the woods after dark at Irchester Country Park, where the marshals come dressed as witches, wizards and ghouls. Choose the 5k or the 2k Family Fun Run, and get into the spirit with fancy dress. Every finisher gets a medal and some Halloween sweets.

5 / Hubble Bubble & Ghostly 1 Mile

The best costume takes home a prize at this Halloween event on the Leeds to Liverpool Canal, which makes dressing up worth the effort. Distances run from a 1-mile Ghostly Fun Run up to an ultra along the flat canalside route. Treats and a bespoke medal wait at the finish.

6 / The Pumpkin Marathon & Spooky Halloween Challenge

Take on the dark lanes of Lightmoor by head torch on Halloween night for the full spooky experience. There's a daytime option too, both offering 5k up to marathon distances near Telford. Fancy dress is encouraged, and the field is kept small, with 40 runners per race.
