How self-sufficient is self-sufficient?
Each runner is responsible for carrying all items listed on the mandatory kit list (which can be found in the race information pack) throughout the event. That means all your clothes, medical supplies, food and sleeping kit will be on your back. This doesn’t mean you’re on your own, though. There’ll be a constant supply of clean drinking water, and boiling water for the preparation of freeze-dried meals, at every camp, as well as drinking water at each checkpoint. Checkpoints are placed approximately every 10km, and there you will find a small shelter, a qualified medic and another supply of clean drinking water.

What are the qualifying criteria?
At BTU, we’re determined to be as open as possible in our entrance criteria. We believe everyone should have a chance to take on one of these life-changing challenges. That said, a significant level of physical fitness is needed to take on races like ours in relative safety. Therefore, we ask that anyone entering one of our races has, at least, finished a marathon-length event within 12 months of their chosen race.

What if I enter but can no longer race?
We would always recommend every competitor purchases appropriate insurance to cover the costs of your entry fee and your participation in any BTU event should you not be able to take part. Once a staged payment has been made it is non-refundable. Please read our terms and conditions before making your payment.

1 LEWA
The Race Begins in Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. In partnership with neighbouring Borana
Conservancy, this UNESCO World Heritage site is home to 93 Black Rhino, 70 White Rhino
and the world’s largest population of Grevy’s Zebra.
The race begins with a cheer from many of Lewa’s staff, friends and family from across the
conservancies who come to see this spectacle. It is an extremely rare thing to watch a
group of people take off into the conservancy on foot. Within the first half of the race you’ll
pass through a number of small Kenyan settlements. The local children will come out to
watch the action and cheer you along as you make your way into the conservancy proper
with a long climb up to the NgareNdare forest.
During the latter part of the stage you’ll cross over into Borana Conservancy, keep an eye
out near CP3 as it sits in full view of the massive rocky outcrop which served as the
inspiration for Pride Rock in Disney’s Lion King. You’ll camp tonight by the NgareNdare river
which is refreshingly cold having flowed down from Mt Kenya’s glaciers.

2 BORANA
Today you set out across Borana Wildlife Conservancy. Borana has a sprawling 32,000
acres of arid grassland, an ideal habitat for the black rhinos which were introduced to the
area for the first time in 50 years back in 2013.
You’ll start the day with a steep climb up from the Ngarendare river. Don’t be fooled by the
relatively tame looking elevation profile. The foothills on this stage are steep, technical and
surprisingly taxing due to the 2,000m altitude.
After this climb you’ll wind your way across wide open plains teeming with Zebra, Giraffe
and Oryx. Keep your head up and you’ll see some amazing wildlife. The sun-baked scrub
lands and foot-hills of the latter half of the stage are as taxing as the first. Under-estimate
them at your peril. You’ll sleep tonight at a camp situated on a huge open grass plain. The
rangers will be posted in the hills keeping watch and we’ll keep a fire burning throughout
the night to warm you and to deter some of this areas larger inhabitants.

3 LOLLDAIGA
Lolldaiga Hills is a working ranch as well as a conservancy and is located 20km from Mt
Kenya. The peak looms along the horizon on a clear day making for some special views.
From the start you’ll traverse the Ole Naishu, a colossal Cattle Ranch, and run among the
famous Lolldaiga range. Lolldaiga is the local word for the Maasai Moran (Warrior) hair
braids and refers to the range of wooded foothills which form the backbone of this
massive tract of land.
Elephant sightings are very common in this area and the race team will be working busily
around you throughout the day. The final checkpoint sits in a gulley surrounded by steep
rocky slopes in a field of lemon scented herbs. This forms a final respite before the climb
toward Ol Jogi conservancy and the night’s camp. The long technical climb will take it out
of tired legs, as will the equally steep descent on the other side.
The reward is our camp site on Ol Jogi, probably the most beautiful of all the camps, where
you’ll pass the night listening to the nearby roar of the lions which patrol this area at night.

4 OL JOGI
Onwards through Ol Jogi Conservancy, one of Kenya’s oldest Rhino sanctuaries. It’s
58,000 acre sprawl has a dense population elephants and 15% of all the remaining Grevys
zebra, as well as more than 40 rhinos.
The stage begins with a run through a dry river bed, a ravine carved out of the earth and
filled with towers of red earth. The floor of this will be full of rhino prints and the footprints
of other animals who have been here while you slept. You’ll find the rest of the stage
interspersed with enormous rock kopjies, rocky outcrops which lurch out of the flat plains
and tower over the trails, you’ll encounter more stunning scenery as you cross this bush-
veld country, home to expansive herds of elephant.
The campsite for the night is next to a local school in a settlement supported by the
conservancy. You’ll make a curious sight for the children as you arrive at camp and shuffle
about your nightly routine.
STAGE FOUR DISTANCE 42KM

5 OL PEJETA
The final stage takes you through Ol Pejeta conservancy, sitting in sight of the mighty Mt
Kenya, which dominates the skyline. This stage is a gently rolling course which winds
through local villages where you’ll get a flavour of contemporary Kenyan culture, and no
doubt have local children to cheer you on.
The trails then wind across open savannah. Your last day running among Africa’s beautiful
and unique wildlife. Your feet may be tired but remember to savour the experience. As you
stop to wonder at the wildlife you’ll maybe find that groups of tourists stop to wonder at
you as you get closer to the finish line. Ol Pejeta is world famous for its wildlife, and was
home to the world’s final remaining Northern White Rhino, Sudan, who sadly passed away
earlier this year. This serves as a timely reminder of why we are here to support Save the
Rhino and For Rangers.
The finish line itself is special too. You’ll end the race by crossing the equator. Beyond the
Ultimate will provide accommodation at Ol Pejeta and you’ll celebrate the end of your
adventure together, under the stars.

You’ll make you own way to Nairobi. The Beyond The Ultimate team will then meet you at our pre-arranged pick-up points for
the coach journey across to Base Camp at Lewa Wildlife conservancy. From this point you are self-sufficient using only your
own kit and food which you must carry yourself throughout the race. The rest of that day will be spent acclimatising to the
temperature and in safety briefings and kit inspections.

We recommend you arrive in country at least 24 hours before the transfer to basecamp.

Packing for an event like the For Rangers Ultra involves making personal choices based on your ambitions for the race as
well as your previous experience of similar events and environments.
The compulsory kit list is therefore a guide to what we would consider a bare minimum to maximise your chances of a
successful event and to remain safe in all foreseeable conditions. We would expect runners to supplement this list with
additional items and have provided a list of other useful items for you to consider here.
Our dedicated Facebook runners group is a great place to ask kit questions and share ideas within a highly knowledgeable
community. We also have several video guides and host live Q&A events that can help you prepare for the race and
organise all your gear.

2,000 daily calories is the absolute minimum. For the majority of runners, we would recommend more based on your
training and experience of other events.

The For Rangers Ultra takes place within a number of wildlife conservancies where you will be exposed to dangerous wildlife; risks which are beyond the control of Beyond the Ultimate, Save the Rhino and For Rangers, who will accept no responsibility for any loss, injury or death.

A mandatory requirement to adhere to both the race organisers’ and conservancies’ codes of conduct, which are there to help protect the safety and welfare of all runners as well as the environment and of the wildlife, will be in place. Any breaking of this code of conduct will result in immediate disqualification from the race.
