Why You’ll Love This Race

Ready for a running challenge with something a bit different? Join us for Race the Train, one of the North West’s most loved and talked-about trail runs. You’ll start the race to the sound of a steam train whistle at Bury, then head north along beautiful trails beside the East Lancashire Railway and the River Irwell — all the way to Rawtenstall.

It’s a point-to-point run of approximately 11 miles — perfect if you love trails, enjoy a fun challenge, or simply want to try something new.

What makes this event really special?
You’re literally racing a steam train*! The train travels ahead, stops to change tracks, then heads north again — giving runners the thrill of trying to keep up.

Friends, family and supporters can even ride the train and cheer you on as you run by. It’s a brilliant way to get everyone involved and make a day of it!

* - weather permitting, alternative diesel train could be used.

Registration typically opens at 09:00 on the morning of the race on Platform 3 - Registration closes 10:25.

Train Tickets for Supporters
Friends and family can buy concessionary tickets to ride the steam train and cheer you on along the route (sold separately from race entry).

There are water stations along the course and plenty of friendly marshals to keep you motivated.
