Thames Meander

Sat 6th November 2021

Four runners stand together under a yellow inflatable finish line arch labeled "Hermes Running." They are smiling and posing for a photo, with three holding trophies. Other participants and spectators can be seen in the background in a park setting. A runner with the number 331 on his chest is mid-air in a joyful leap on a forest path, lined with trees and a wooden fence. Another runner is seen in the background. The atmosphere is vibrant with lush green foliage.

Organiser's Description

A scenic riverside race starting from the Burnell Avenue Recreation Field, Kingston-Upon-Thames, TW10 7YE proceeding along the Thames Path on an out and back flat and fast scenic riverside route that is very well marked and marshalled all the way along the course, with well stocked check points.

Runners World rated as one of the top 10 marathons in the U.K.

Course Description / Route

The marathon course starts just outside the Burnell Avenue Recreation Field HQ, near the Thames Path. The out / back route proceeds from the HQ and runs along the Thames Path past the Boaters Arms pub, out towards the far side of Canbury Gardens where the course then loops around at this marshalled turning point, returning past the race HQ and proceeding all the way along the Thames Path as far as the Barn Elms Rowing Club (Barnes) Aid Station. Marathon runners will then turnaround here repeating the same route in reverse, so returning along the Thames Path bypassing the race HQ again to the far side of Canbury Gardens which is the final turnaround point for this last 2.2 mile out / back section, and completion of the marathon course at race HQ. The half marathon proceeds from the HQ and runs in the opposite direction initially from the full marathon out along the Thames Path to the Aid Station at the Kew Gardens car park which is the half marathon marshalled turnaround point, returning along the Thames Path bypassing the race HQ towards Canbury Gardens where the course turns just past the Boaters Inn pub to return in reverse direction finishing back at the race HQ. The route for both races will be very well signposted with fixed Hermes Running pink and black signs demarcating the run-route, and there will be marshals at both the full and half marathon turnaround points. The marathon runners will be given red race bib numbers and the half marathon runners will be allocated blue race bib numbers, this is to make it much easier for our marshals / runners to distinguish between the full and half, so if you see a runner flying past you just check out his or her race bib before you decide to speed up !

If you’re coming by train the nearest station is Kingston, which is 1.6 miles away, about a 25-30 min walk.

The time limit for the marathon is 6.5hrs.

Minimum age for the marathon is 18 years old

Course Details

The course is 99% flat / fast and is run along the Thames Path out / back. We would ask runners to exercise due care when running under Richmond Bridge then past the Richmond town centre, as this area can get very congested, so please take extra care when running past this area and be very courteous to the general public.

The conditions are weather dependant and if it rains the Thames Path trail can get muddy on stretches.

Very scenic route along the Thames, well organised. There was a hall to get changed in, but maybe a few too many runners for the amount of rest room facilities available at peak times. Well signed route.

Well organised. Pretty straightforward route to follow along the river. The only thing I have struggled with was the amount of people during the morning and afternoon along the route, especially when coming back from Hammersmith and Chiswick Bridge. Really nice medal and good vibe in general.

Excellent organisation, refreshments and atmosphere. Thank you for an incredible experience! I only have one piece of constructive criticism. Running past the finish line to continue running for another 2 miles is psychologically quite challenging. Not sure if it would be possible to extend the first part of the race along the river so it's exactly a half way point? This way when you see the finish line, you're actually running towards it. Thanks again to all the team involved!

The on-the-day experience was great. The race took in some fantastic scenery along the Thames. Overall, the race was well organised with a nice medal at the end. Quite a bottleneck for the first 1km, so perhaps a staggered start would be better in future. The pre-race confirmation and instructions email could be improved upon - it was rather unclear.

Great fun with friends! Would have preferred a loop race, but scenery was beautiful on a sunny autumn morning!
